英語訳
【Upper Section】
Kanke (Sugawara no Michizane)
This time the turtle(kame)is broken—
no shell to speak of; the rainwater
barrel just barely
made it in time
*(Pun: "kame" means both "turtle" — symbol of good luck — and "jar/pot"; the rainwater barrel [tenmizu-oke] used for firefighting was knocked over by the earthquake.)*
Sanjō Udaijin (Minister of the Right)
What has become of Fukagawa—
a great conflagration, and word
that bodies of the dead
are lying there
【Lower Section】
Hōshōji Nyūdō
Standing amid the burnt-out fields
and looking about — how
pitiful: to the right and left
the storehouses have all collapsed
Juntoku-in
Without even putting on his leggings,
he crawled out naked—
such a terrible
earthquake it was
