搗いた米をもらいに出た、そのなりのあわれな（様子の人が）一人おり、余りにも遅く、また早く（出かけすぎた）、（その間に）過ぎてしまった……
流された家はまだ残っており、御普請（修復・建設工事）もまだ始まらないうちに、一日に男は二合、女は一合のご飯を、（役人が）量り与えることで命をつなぐ糧とした時に——

「（鉢の木の）その時の米は六斗がいにてありし（六斗相当の価値があった）」
世の中のその変事（浅間山噴火の被害）のために、一合、年に二合、合わせて三合を貸し与えていただいた（ような）、（かつてない）逼迫した時節の米を、
名主が取り次ぎくださいましょう。

Someone went out to receive their allotment of hulled rice, looking pitifully worn in appearance, going out too slowly, or perhaps too early, and the time had already passed...
The houses that had been washed away still remained (in ruins), and before the reconstruction work had even begun, people sustained their lives on rations of two *gō* of rice per day for men and one *gō* for women, measured out (by officials) as the thread by which life was maintained. At this time—
(Parody of a *utai* chant, referencing the *Hachi no Ki* tale)
"At that time (as in the tale of Hachi no Ki), the rice was worth as much as six *to*."
Due to this catastrophe (the eruption of Mt. Asama) that had befallen the world, one *gō*, then two *gō* per year—three *gō* in total—was lent out (to the survivors) during these most desperate of times, and it is the village headman (*nanushi*) who has graciously acted as intermediary in this matter.
