## Record of the Great Asama Mountain Collapse

In the beginning, in our land of Japan, long ago during the reign of Tenrin-jō-ō (the Wheel-Turning King) of the Kingdom of Saijō in Tenjiku (India), the heavens and earth shook six times, and the mountain called "Mitarai-zan," located in the northeast corner of Ryōjusen (Gṛdhrakūṭa, Vulture Peak), collapsed and sank into the great ocean. Then, two hundred and one thousand, four hundred and more years later, the deities Izanagi and Izanami, standing upon the Heavenly Floating Bridge, wondered "might there be a land below?" and lowered the Heavenly Jeweled Spear downward...
