This was carried out as before, in accordance with the petition to the [lord's] reign. One entry: On the evening of the 19th day of the 7th month of the same year of the Tiger, Ogata Chūhachi, a masterless samurai (rōnin) residing in the Uchida-tenga village of Ukemura, went to the residence of Matsumoto Nobuhei, a country samurai (ji-zamurai) of Eda village in the same tenga district. Having a long-standing grudge, he called Matsumoto out and suddenly attacked him with a drawn sword at the gate. However, as Matsumoto was already a skilled practitioner of swordsmanship (kenpō), he easily wrested the sword away and handed it to Yasaemon, who happened to be present. When Chūhachi attacked again with his short sword (wakizashi), this too was knocked away. Chūhachi then fled into Nobuhei's house, stole a kitchen knife (菜刀/包丁) from the kitchen, and returned to the gate. Matsumoto and his son came to the gate, but the father and son were unaware that he was hiding the kitchen knife and were off their guard. Chūhachi slashed Nobuhei across the forehead with the knife, cutting him approximately three to four sun [approximately 9–12 cm] deep. He struck again, grazing the left cheek, and cut into the shoulder, drawing much blood, before taking back the knife. Chūhachi then fled and was lost in the mountains, his whereabouts becoming unknown. The following day, relatives came from various places to Eda village to search for Nobuhei, but ultimately his whereabouts could not be determined either. For the next seven or eight days, they searched everywhere, but his location remained unknown. Both parties reported the matter to the authorities (go-kōhen), and the patrol officers (kōji-mawari-shū) searched everywhere, eventually finding Nobuhei in the Yanagawa domain. On the 10th day of the 8th month, he was taken directly to the Kumamoto prison. Chūhachi was also imprisoned in the same way. Yasaemon, who had been temporarily holding the sword, was also taken into custody. The reason Nobuhei had gone to the Yanagawa domain was that a retired monk from a temple in Eda village, through a letter of request from Hii-no-i village, [had helped Nobuhei]…
