諸言
海ノ内外ヲ問ハス近年温泉浴ノ行ハルヽ実ニ盛ナリト
謂フ可シ余曩ニ公事ヲ以テ奥羽信越地方ヘ派出ノ際地
質調査ノ為メ屢々礦泉湧出ノ地ヲ巡視セシカ何レノ地

【序言】
国の内外を問わず、近年温泉浴が広く行われていることは、まことに盛んであると言うべきである。私はかつて公務をもって奥羽・信越地方へ派遣された際、地質調査のために度々鉱泉の湧出する地を巡視したが、いずれの地方においても温泉浴客の多いことには驚かずにはいられなかった。このように浴客が数多く集まる理由は、その温泉それぞれに効験があることによることは間違いない。しかしながら、浴する者が必ずしも鉱泉の性質を十分に理解したうえで入浴しているとは限らない。それゆえ私はこの書を編纂し、各温泉の性質を挙げ、それぞれに疾病の適応症を付記することで、いささか浴客の参考に供するとともに、あわせてわが国の地質を推察する一助とするものである。

【Preface】
Whether at home or abroad, the practice of hot spring bathing has grown remarkably prevalent in recent years, and one can truly say it is flourishing. When I was formerly dispatched on official business to the Ōu and Shin'etsu regions, I repeatedly toured areas where mineral springs emerge as part of geological surveys, and in every region I visited, I could not help but be astonished by the great number of hot spring bathers. The reason so many bathers flock to these places must certainly be due to the efficacy of each spring. However, one cannot guarantee that those who bathe have always thoroughly acquainted themselves with the properties of the mineral springs before doing so. For this reason, I have compiled this volume, enumerating the properties of each spring and appending the indications — that is, the ailments for which each spring is suited — in order to offer some reference for bathers, and at the same time to serve as an aid in contemplating the geology of our nation.
