『四庫全書』（清人・朱筠による）には、『天文略』（西洋人・湯瑪諾〔トマス〕撰）を駁論して次のように述べている。「この書は、諸天・七政・太陽の節気・昼夜の長短・交食の本源などについて、すべて問答形式を設けてその意義を明らかにしている。〔中略〕冒頭に自序があり、その本来の術法を脇に置いて、天主の功績を盛んに称え、天主を信奉する者はすなわち天に昇ることができると説いて、無知な民衆を誘い惑わせている。おそらく推測（天文計算）の効験があることを利用して、天主教の教えが偽りではないことを証明しようとしているのであろう。その意図するところは極めて詭譎（きわめて巧みな欺き）である。」云々。
この文章は明らかに、西洋人の腹の内（本心）を見透かしており、彼らが天文・暦理を語る本来の意図は、ただ天主教を弘め広めんがためであることを述べている。これは支那（中国）の明末に〔西洋人が〕忍び込んだ時の説を論じたものではあるが、このような異国人の本心がどうして当時のみに限られたことであろうか。近年、本邦（日本）に渡来した蛮籍（西洋の書物）——天文書・地理書・医書・究理書（物理・科学書）——を閲覧するに、いずれもこの旨を言わないものはない。（その文については略して前篇の上巻に載せた。）これ〔以下続く〕

In the "Siku Quanshu" (annotated by the Qing scholar Zhu Yun), a critique of the "Tianwen Lüe" (compiled by the Western barbarian Thomas [Tomás/Manuel Dias Jr.?]) states: "This book, concerning the various heavens, the seven luminaries, the solar divisions of the year, the lengths of day and night, the origins of eclipses, and so on, establishes a question-and-answer format to illuminate its principles. [Passage omitted.] At the beginning there is a preface in which the author sets aside the technical methods of the work itself and lavishly praises the merits of the Lord of Heaven, claiming that those who believe in and revere the Lord of Heaven shall ascend to heaven—thereby enticing and misleading the ignorant masses. The intent appears to be to exploit the proven effectiveness of astronomical calculations in order to demonstrate that the teachings of the Lord of Heaven (Catholicism) are not fraudulent. The underlying motive is extremely cunning and deceitful." And so on.
This passage clearly sees through the true intentions lurking in the hearts of the Westerners, stating that their real purpose in discussing astronomy and calendrical science is solely to propagate and spread the teachings of the Lord of Heaven (Catholicism). Although this discussion concerns the period when Westerners infiltrated China toward the end of the Ming dynasty, can we suppose that such foreigners' true intentions were limited only to that era? In recent years, examining the Western books (barbarian texts) that have arrived in our country—books on astronomy, geography, medicine, and natural philosophy (science)—there is not a single one that fails to express this same intent.
