Those who speak of this matter have an ulterior purpose. To give a general outline of their shameful conduct: they sail their ships in all directions, forcibly demanding trade with nations everywhere, and at the slightest provocation resort to war. When bought off with gold and silver they temporarily desist, but in the end they exhaust a nation's financial resources, weaken its national polity, and watch for an opportunity to swallow it whole like a whale. Previous examples of their seizure of various countries have already demonstrated this pattern. The *Poxie Ji* (Collection Refuting Heterodoxy) states: "In the early Jiajing era (corresponding to the Bunei and Kyōroku periods in Japan), these barbarians stealthily entered Luzon, deceptively borrowed a piece of land under the pretext of trade, gradually lured the native people, and made each of them submit to their teaching (referring to the Jesus/Lord of Heaven religion), and ultimately annexed Luzon and swallowed it whole. Their scheming was exceedingly wicked. They also oppressed the people with cruel laws," and so forth. These people fundamentally know nothing of benevolence and righteousness; driven solely by greed, they brave perilous waves to reach every nation. At every port they arrive at, they lure people with their heretical religion (the Jesus/Lord of Heaven religion, i.e., Christianity), cause the native people to submit to it, and use this as a tool for devouring those nations. The *Yedu Shiju* (Solid Evidence of Heterodox Poison) therefore states: "One who deceives those from afar merely causes people to believe that they harbor no ulterior intentions. These barbarians are deeply scheming and cunningly calculating. Upon arriving at one country, they invariably destroy that country, using each country to attack that same country. The number of countries they have successively swallowed already exceeds thirty. (Omitted.) They kill the rulers of all these countries, seize their peoples, and with just a few men they instantly subjugate an entire country," and so forth. And they have been eyeing our Imperial Nation like mice watching for an opportunity for many years now. I secretly fear that our people too will be gradually devoured by them. In ancient times it was said that "one stratagem harms three wise men." Now again, one heterodoxy (Christianity) seeks to destroy three Ways (Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism). How can one fail to be filled with dread? To summarize the teachings of the Western barbarians: it is as if one borrows a lantern to dispel the anxiety of traveling at night — where does the debt of gratitude lie? Should one thank the lantern, or the person who lent it? The sun and moon, which illuminate and shine upon us, were created by the Lord of Heaven and given to all people; therefore they are the lanterns of this world. (The *Tiandao Suyuan* states: "In our Heavenly Teaching, the sun and moon are not worth revering — they are altogether like paper lanterns," and so forth.) Therefore, the grace of illumination and nurturing lies not with the sun and moon but with the Lord of Heaven. The people of the world, not knowing the Lord of Heaven, [worship the sun and moon...]
