スベシ。今牛痘ハ止（タゝ）四顆或六顆ヲ種ユ。小兒嬉笑飲
食一切常ノ如ク。旬日ノ外ソノ成功ヲ告ク。災ナク
害ナク。惟小兒疾苦ヲ省却スルノミナラズ。即子ヲ
育スル者モ。亦憂労ヲ消却ス。法誠ニ善ナレバナリ

或問牛痘ヲ種テ死スル者有リヤ否ヤ。曰。断テ死ヲ
致スノ理ナシ。予少キ時イマダ天花ヲ出タサス。洋
醫予ガ為ニ種ユ。時ニ年三十二歳。今己十有三年。
予ガ手ヲ経テ種ル所ノ小兒。萬千ニ下ラス。皆根基
長養シテ。妻ヲ娶リ子ヲ生ムニ至ル。盡ク數ユルコ
ト能ハズ。即南城ノ賓谷曾大中丞ノ如キ。年六十二
近クシテ。嗣ヲ得ルニ艱（ナヤ）メリ。前ニ吾ガ粤ニ藩ヲ開ク
時。一子ヲ擧ク。予ニ命シテ種痘ヲ為サシム。手ニ随
テ効ヲ奏ス。勿＿レ藥有＿レ喜ノ四字ノ扁額ヲ以テ贈ラル。

これを盗賊を捕らえることに例えよう。その羽翼がまだ成熟しないうちに乗じて、捕らえてしまえば非常に容易である。また、これを雑草を取り除くことに例えよう。それが繁茂してまだ広がらないうちに刈り取って除けば、非常に容易である。人家の子どもが痘瘡を発症し、もし重篤な症状に遭遇すれば、医者を呼び薬を服用し、家族全員が朝夕守りながら看病する。どれほどの辛苦であることか。神に問い仏に祈る、どれほどの驚恐であることか。軽症の者も、やはり多方面にわたる調護が必要である。今、牛痘接種はただ四粒あるいは六粒を種付けるのみ。子どもは笑い遊び、飲食もすべて普段どおりで、十日余りもすれば成功を告げる。災いなく害なく、ただ子どもの苦痛を省くのみならず、子を育てる者もまた憂いと労苦が消える。この方法は誠に優れているからである。

Let us compare this to catching a thief: if one seizes the opportunity while his wings have not yet fully grown, capturing him becomes exceedingly easy. Or compare it to removing weeds: if one cuts them down before they spread and multiply, removing them becomes exceedingly easy. When a child in a household breaks out with smallpox and encounters a severe case, a doctor is summoned, medicine is administered, and the entire family watches over the child morning and night. What tremendous hardship this is! Prayers are offered to the gods and the Buddha — what tremendous fear and alarm! Even in mild cases, careful nursing from multiple angles is required. Now, with cowpox vaccination, one need only inoculate four or six pustules. The child laughs and plays, eats and drinks entirely as usual, and within ten days or so, success is proclaimed. There is no disaster, no harm. Not only is the child spared from suffering, but those who raise the child are also freed from worry and toil. This is because the method is truly excellent.
