**[Right page]**
The ninth day yields *banbyō* ("late seedling"). All of these are sufficient for inoculation (*hashu*). There is nothing planted (*tanē*) that does not grow true; nothing that grows true that does not flourish (*hide*); nothing that flourishes that does not flower; nothing that flowers that does not fruit; and nothing that fruits that does not reach completion. In general: at three to four days it emerges, constituting *kenten* [the stage at which the pox spots first appear]; at five to six days it flourishes, constituting *kichō* [the stage of swelling/raising]; at seven to eight days it constitutes *manshō* [the stage of filling with fluid]; at twelve to thirteen days it fruits, constituting *shūyō* [the stage of scabbing over]; and at fourteen to fifteen days the scab (*ka*) forms and it is at last fully matured.
Once the seedling lymph is confirmed to be of good quality, at the time of collection one should use the tip of a lancet (*tōsen*) and, directing it toward the perimeter of the pox surface (*tōmen*), lightly and gently scrape and breach it. At the center of the pox surface, where there is a slightly hardened point, one should slightly lift the small dimple (*shōyō*), and use only that fluid (*shō*) which is clear and bright (*seiryō*). If the fluid appears whitish and turbid, or yellowish, one should touch and remove the cloudy fluid (*dakushō*) two or three times with the tip of the lancet, and then wait until the fluid forms a single bead — perfectly round like a pearl (*enju*) — that does not run or scatter.
**[Left page]**
It is considered best practice to wait for such a bead. A single good-quality drop (*kōshō*) is sufficient to vaccinate several persons.
**(Zō)** Upon respectful examination (*kyōan*): As a general rule, one unit (*ikka*) of fluid may be used to inoculate thirty to forty individuals. In the case of the very finest pox and best-quality seedling lymph, two units were used as seedling and yielded inoculations in one hundred and eighty-four individuals; and from one unit of seedling, one hundred and five individuals were inoculated with fluid still remaining. All those inoculated with this seedling developed true pox (*shintō*). The statement that "only a single drop of fluid" should be taken is merely a general guideline.
At the time of inoculation, both sleeves of the child's garment (*isan*) should be rolled up and secured over the upper arms (*senjō*). Using two small cords, one passed through each sleeve from front to back horizontally, tie them tightly, so that both upper arms are left fully exposed. Even in cold weather — *[text continues]*
