**[Right page]** — [from the side of the blister,] pierce the surface and use the first single drop that wells forth. The fluid that comes out subsequently is prone to deterioration and is thus difficult to use as seedling lymph (*byō*). **(Pu/Mo)** It also states: Once a red halo (*kōun*) has appeared, the pox fluid (*tōshō*) undergoes a sudden transformation, and even if inoculated, it will fail to produce infection. In some cases it may give rise to irregular blisters, ulcers, *Roos* [i.e., erysipelas/rose-poison, a type of erythematous toxin], and the like. This is precisely what happens when seedling lymph is collected after the twelfth day, after suppuration has already occurred. **(Katsu)** It further states: When collecting the fluid, one must not squeeze it out by hand, but should wait for it to well forth naturally. Otherwise, severe swelling may result. **(Mo)** It also states: Whether the seedling is taken directly from a cow or from a human, there is no difference in its nature. **(Ga/Kon)** It further states: The infectious substance (*densenshtsu*) of cowpox resides within the fluid (*shō*). **[Left page]** The fluid is a transparent, flowing substance (*ryūdōbutsu*), bearing a slight viscosity and a faintly salty taste (*kanmi*), with absolutely no odor. Its composition consists approximately of water and *tansei* [egg white/albumin]. When a sample of good-quality fluid is taken and examined under a microscope (*kenbikkyō*), numerous small globules (*shōkyū*) are found, constantly moving about within it. Although their shapes and sizes are by no means uniform, in the case of genuine pox (*seitō*) fluid, they are generally perfectly spherical. Moreover, the efficacy of the fluid corresponds to the abundance of these small globules. When the fluid becomes over-ripe, the globules decrease. If vinegar or other acidic substances are mixed in, the globules dissolve; if the fluid is warmed, the globules disappear — and consequently, the power of transmission is likewise diminished and destroyed. **(Pu)** Upon respectful examination (*kyōan*): In general, seedling lymph (*tōbyō*) is of three kinds. The seventh day yields *sōbyō* ("early seedling"), the eighth day yields *seibyō* ("standard seedling"), — *[continued]*
