When the helmsman Sanzaburō was summoned and questioned in detail, he reported one by one: that in Etorofu everything had been confiscated, leaving them stripped of all possessions with nothing remaining; that they had not been given food; that they had repeatedly been beaten; and that Yamakawa-ya's Chōuemon had gone missing. This account was conveyed by Asauemon to Shirōzaemon, and their voices could be heard through the partition. Upon hearing this, Asauemon was heard to say, "How truly pitiable," and this voice carried all the way to the kitchen. Shirōzaemon then appeared and said, "As it is a lengthy matter, I cannot remember it all accurately. Please write it down and submit it." Accordingly, they wrote it all out in detail in kana-mixed script and had the ship's captain submit it, whereupon they were immediately called in as Asauemon would receive it directly. The captain reported everything without omission, at which point Asauemon grew displeased, saying, "You do not know your way in the direction of Etorofu — Etorofu is a distant island beyond our jurisdiction, and though it differs from places connected to Matsumae by land, such things should not have happened." Seeing this state of affairs, the helmsman Sanzaburō

said, "No, that was not the case — even on the island, we were gradually given care. As for the ship, it was cast away into the open sea along with its cargo. Yamakawa-ya's Chōuemon passed away due to illness." Upon hearing this, Asauemon replied, "Indeed, that must have been the case." Then, at the residence of Okabe Shirōzaemon, a written statement was handed over to us, and we were also given a draft to prepare our own written acknowledgment to submit in return. Following the draft, we wrote it out, pressed our thumbprints upon it, and handed it over. After this, we were told, "Though we should send you all the way to Tsugaru from here, ships are not available at this time. Fortunately, there is a messenger vessel — would you like to travel on that?" We replied, requesting to be sent on the available vessel. Arrangements were made for two ships, and ten ryō in gold coins were given to the entire group as travel money, along with seven tan of cotton cloth for making momohiki (leggings). We immediately asked the innkeeper to have them sewn. From the innkeeper's boatman as well, saying "you will surely need things on board," a hand towel was given to each person. Additionally, the innkeeper provided a small amount of tobacco. And now, directly homeward—
