……剞劂（きけつ）の事を謀ろうとしたところ、いくばくもなく、秋八月、先人は疾（やまい）により没した。ああ、哀しいかな。家祖（かそ）が即世してより、今に至るまで二十八年。余は、膝下にあって剣（けん）に倚り面（おもて）を受けて教誨（きょうかい）を受けるに及ばず、先人もまた年未だ五十にして鬼籙（きろく）に上り、その業を成すあたわず。昊天（こうてん）は、それ何人（なんびと）をか〔えこひいきする〕のか。今茲（ことし）、甲寅（きのえとら）の夏六月、すなわち『温泉小言（おんせんしょうげん）』を刻し、窃（ひそ）かに先志を嗣ぎ、因りて先人の語を挙げ、謹んで以て跋（ばつ）と為す。家祖の徳業・学術に至りては、北山先生の序に具さにこれを尽くす。今また敢えて贅（ぜい）を言わず。

...Just as arrangements were being made to commission the woodblock carvers, before long, in the eighth month of autumn, the elder [my father] died of illness. Alas, how grievous! It has now been twenty-eight years since our ancestor [Master Sōkei] passed from this world. I was never able to receive instruction at his knee, leaning on his sword and looking up to his face; and my father, too, ascended to the register of the dead before reaching the age of fifty, unable to complete his work. O vast Heaven—whom do you favor? This year, in the sixth month of summer, in the year *Kinoe-Tora* [甲寅], I have had *Onsen Shōgen* ('Minor Remarks on Hot Springs') engraved on woodblocks, quietly carrying on the aspirations of my predecessors. I have accordingly set forth the words of my father [the elder] and respectfully composed this postscript. As for our ancestor's virtue, achievements, and scholarship, the preface by Master Hokuzan fully expounds upon them. I therefore venture no further superfluous words here.
