曰嗚呼児不知耶乃祖多年研精於
孔子学所著述若非朱詰物疑藤洙
泗微響四書指斥三家疵瘕等或卒
業或未脱草不幸即世余欲嗣其志
然少己委質就官公務鞅掌加之以
多病故未果也如此書其成也昔者
乃祖療疾於温泉逆旅主人意知乃
祖之博学多識叩以温泉或乃祖因

"Alas, do you not know? Your grandfather devoted many years to the profound study of Confucian learning, and among his writings were works such as 'Shu Kitsu Butsu Gi,' 'Tō Shushi Bikyō,' 'Shisho Shiseki,' and 'Sanka Shika.' Some were completed while others remained in draft form, but unfortunately he passed away before finishing them all. I wished to continue his aspirations, but having taken official position from a young age, I was overwhelmed with public duties, and moreover suffered from frequent illness, so I was unable to accomplish this. The completion of this book came about as follows: Long ago, when grandfather was taking the waters at a hot spring for his health, the innkeeper, recognizing grandfather's vast learning and knowledge, inquired about hot springs. Grandfather then spoke through the night, citing ancient sources and comparing them with contemporary knowledge. The innkeeper was greatly delighted by this. I happened to be present at the time and merely recorded what was said. Could grandfather have intended this for publication? Yet now that we carve it into printing blocks, this may not accord with grandfather's original intentions. Nevertheless, saving the world and benefiting people was indeed grandfather's desire.
