原敬仲（公瑶）が、ある日、息子の伯慶を連れてやって来て、私に師事させ、家業を受け継ぎ、その祖父に倣わせたいと委ねた。その伯慶の祖父、双桂先生は、平安（京都）の処士である。かつて東涯氏の門下で学んだが、当時、塾中の諸君子の中で彼の右に出る者はなく、東涯はしばしば後進の中で彼を称えた。

Preface to "Onsen Shōgen" (Brief Words on Hot Springs)

Hara Keichu (Kōyō) came one day, bringing his son Hakkei, and entrusted him to me as a student, intending for him to inherit the family profession and follow in his grandfather's footsteps. Now, Hakkei's grandfather, Master Sōkei, was a private scholar (shoshi) of Heian (Kyoto). He had once studied at the school of Tōgai, and among all the students at the academy at that time, none surpassed him. Tōgai frequently praised him among the younger generation.
