**[Right folio]** *From the Rokubutsu Shinshi (六物新志, "New Treatise on Six Substances")* **On Eburiko (喧蒲里歌)** Upon reflection, *Moshitsu* (茂質, the author's pen name used here) notes: "Eburiko" is a tree fungus (*kinoko*) produced on the island of Ezo, which belongs to our country (Japan), and is what we call the "wood-ear of the Ezo pine." It has long been known throughout the world for its remarkable efficacy, and those who use it have been many for a great while. However, not one of the Chinese materia medica texts, regional gazetteers, or similar works has ever recorded or explained it. Therefore, its physical properties and therapeutic indications could not be clearly ascertained, and those who used it merely followed oral traditions passed down among common people, without any certain basis. In the spring, third month, of the *Anei Hinoe-Saru* year (安永丙申, 1776), when a Dutch delegation came to make their formal visit to the capital (*sankō*), the medical official Lord Katsuragawa brought this substance and inquired about it to the Dutch physician surnamed "Kareruhi-tere" (カレルヒテレ), given name "Toyiniruke" (トイニルケ). He replied: "This is indeed what we in our country call *Agaricos* (アガリコス)." Upon hearing this, I consulted the Dutch botanical works—one known under another name as the *Sōmokuryu* (草木琉) and the *Hietsu* (窓葉都 / *Oetus*)—and found that both the illustrations and descriptions fully agreed with what the Dutchman had said, leaving no further room for doubt. The book *Oetus* (窩葉都) states: In Latin, it is called by some "*Acaricas*" (亜互里歌斯) and by others "*Acarica mukeheke Tabiris*" (亜互里歌謹敵傑太弼里斯). This is what we call "*Rorukeni-zuamme*" (魯爾更聚墨) in our country — a *zuamme* (mushroom/fungus) 《marginal note: comparable to *mimi-kusa* / wood-ear fungus》 growing upon the "*Rorukeni*" (魯爾更) tree. This substance is produced in the mountain valleys and forest foothills of places such as Tirol (テロル / 恒羅児) and Schwarzenberg (スワルトシニ協爾 / 斯窓児咄星協爾) 《marginal note: both place names belonging to the European continent》. Merchants of our country (the Netherlands) and of the land called *Umaruslando* (物角私卵度) 《marginal note: place name》 trade for it there and distribute it to all directions. *[The rest is abbreviated.]* Ezo Eburiko can weigh five or six *kin* per piece in the largest examples, which I have personally examined. Even the largest specimens of the Western product do not compare to these, and the superior quality of the Ezo product is greatly praised. Pharmacies further divide this product into three grades: the coarser, lower-grade product is called "*Acarico-mumesanumuto*" (亜互里歌模墨紗奴模); the middle-grade product is called "*Hinu-mu-Acari-* **[Left folio]** *ki*" (虚奴模亜互里吉); and the highest grade is called "*Rosshu-mura-mu-Acari-ki*" (蝋修羅模亜互里吉). Both the middle and upper grades are considered of fine quality. The "*Rorukeni*" tree (魯角更樹) is called the "*Roikisu*" tree (路伊吉斯樹) in Latin. Both the books of *Hibuneru* (吸蒲■児) and *Shinemeru* (削墨児) state: The *Rorukeni* tree is produced in the high mountains of *Suwitserland* (斯微泄角卵度, Switzerland) and the mountains called *Alpen* (亜児迸, the Alps) 《marginal note: a mountain name; this mountain is exceedingly high and lies on the border of France (拂郎) and "*Serumanea*" (入尓瑪泥亜, Germania/Germany)》, as well as in *Tausene* (達烏虚■) and *Laror* (位羅羅児) 《marginal note: place name, belonging to the European continent》. The tree grows tall and upright; its bark is rough and thick, reddish on the outer surface, and has a fragrant aroma. From the middle of the trunk upward to the tips, branches grow out on all sides, rising vigorously, with the tips drooping down, much like a weeping willow (*yōryū*). Its leaves are slender, long, and densely packed like hair. They are yellow and fragrant; in spring the tree puts out leaves and flowers. The flowers are red with a faint ivory tinge. By summer, it bears fruit in the shape of a pine cone (*matsukasa*), forming a pattern of fish-scales. This Ezo pine is occasionally found at nurseries and plant dealers (*uekiya*), but only as small bonsai specimens — one can observe only its general form in miniature. ○ The Ezo people call Eburiko individually "Tahoshi" (タホシ / 多色失). Whenever the local inhabitants (*dojin*) fall ill, they use this substance regardless of the distinction between *yin* and *yang*, deficiency or cold, heat or location of the ailment, and regardless of whether the condition involves *ki*, blood, water, fire, internal injury, or external cause. They simply use this substance together with "*Ichimato*" (イチマト / 伊結麻) 《marginal note: some say its Chinese name is *Gyūhishō* (牛皮消), though whether this is correct is unknown》 to treat the illness, with no need for any other medicine. ○ Through the explanations of Western medicine (*seii*), I was able to ascertain in detail the properties and efficacy of this substance. Those who use it each time and obtain a gentle laxative effect (*biri*) to achieve results find it far from unbearable. When formed into tablets (*jō*), it is especially swift in producing its effect. Furthermore, grinding Eburiko and dried ginger (*kankō*) in the proportions described above into powder, combining them, and forming them into pills with paste is also effective. Additionally, adding Eburiko to the "Four Substances Decoction" (*Shimotsu-tō* / 四物湯) is highly effective in treating women who suffer from acute abdominal pain arising before the onset of each menstrual period. This is indeed a prescription handed down among common people. Having tried it repeatedly, however, its effect is truly miraculous — like the work of a god. Therefore, I record it here. ○ Eburiko produced in the Nambu (南部) region is no different from the Ezo product in shape, form, or flavor. Perhaps its local environment (*fūki*) is the same as that of Matsumae and Ezo?
