*Yakuen* (薬円, Medicinal Circle) — Ezo (Hokkaido) product

*Eburiko*
*Agarikosu* (亜百里哥斯, "Agaricus") — namely *Eburiko* (エブリコ / 滝蒲里哥)
**[Quotation from "Rokubutsu Shinshi" (六物新志)]**
In the land of Ezo, there grows a kind of tree fungus (*kinoko*). There are two varieties, depending on the tree. The first is found at the foot of the mountains of Ishikari, and the Ainu people call it "*Jūgu*" (仍吾). It resembles a root — damaged at the trunk — but is shorter. They call the fungus growing on it "*Taboshi*" (多色失). This tree is what is known as the *Tōhi* (唐檜, Sakhalin spruce), also called the *Ezo Hinoki* (蝦夷檜, Ezo cypress).
The second variety is found in the eastern region of *Edoroffu* (エドロッフ / 晻多魯不). 《Marginal note: Said to be one of the so-called "Thirty-six Islands," with a circumference of approximately three hundred *ri* or more.》 This is a truly remote and isolated place. The tree closely resembles the *Goyō no Matsu* (五鬣松, five-needled pine), and in the Ainu language it is called "*Rii*" (古伊). The fungus growing on this tree is called "*Riikarushi*" (古伊加角失), and also "*Risurikarushi*" (古斯里加角失). The element "*Karushi*" (加角失) means "tree fungus" (*kinoko*) in Ainu.

**[Left folio, lower right]**
On the fourth day of the eighth month of the year Hinoe-Saru (丙申, 1836), drawn from life from a specimen in the possession of a certain person named Kōshi, (apparently obtained by request).
**[Left folio, lower left]**
(*Eburiko*) is a variety of *Saru no Koshikake* (硬木耳, hard bracket fungus). It is white in color and light in weight; when the flesh is rubbed between the fingers, it feels like cotton. Its flavor is intensely bitter (*kuretsu*), and it is said to be highly effective in treating abdominal pain and *shakki* (積気, stagnation of vital energy in the abdomen). It is said to grow mainly on larch trees (*落葉松, kara matsu*).
