食料とした。食事もなく、年老いた者は溝や谷に倒れ伏し、若い壮健な者は四方に離散して、野には餓死者が出た。信州・上野両国は騒動に及び、まことに痛ましい有様であった。その事の由来を尋ねれば、それなりのわけがあることだと言われる。  旅の空の憂き寝の肘枕 さて、天明元年子の秋の頃とやら、名声や利欲を疎んじ、憂き世を嫌い、塵にまみれた世俗から逃れようと、どこを宿とも定めず、雲水のように定まりない行脚の旅をしている僧がいた。年齢は六十余り、竹の杖をついて諸国をめぐり、遠江の秋葉山から伊那路を越えて衣ヶ崎に頭陀行をしていたのを、上野の諏訪に向かい、内々に願いがあって、社頭の木の根を枕として、石のような頭で眠りについた。ひとまどろみ

英語訳

[People used leaves and grass as sustenance.] Those without food — the elderly collapsed into ditches and gullies, while the young and able-bodied scattered in all directions, and the starving dead lay upon the fields. Both Shinshū and Kōzuke provinces fell into turmoil, and it was a truly pitiful state of affairs. When one inquires into the origins of these events, there is said to be a reason for it all.  *Sleeping restlessly on an elbow pillow under the traveling sky* Now, it was said to be around the autumn of Tenmei 1 (1781), the year of the Rat. There was a wandering Buddhist monk who disdained fame and gain, loathed this world of sorrow, and sought to escape from the dusty ways of society, roaming about with no fixed abode, making a pilgrimage with the unfettered freedom of drifting clouds and flowing water. He was over sixty years of age. Traveling through the provinces with a bamboo staff, he had come performing ascetic *tudā* practices from Akiha-san in Tōtōmi Province, crossed the Ina road, and arrived at Kinugasaki. He then made his way toward Suwa in Kōzuke, having a private wish to fulfill, and made his pillow at the root of a tree by the shrine, laying his stone-hard head to rest.
