(According to the *Liyueling* [Monthly Ordinances of the Rites]:) In spring, its emperor is Taiho (Taihao); in summer, its emperor is the Flame Emperor (Yandi); at the center, its emperor is the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi); in autumn, its emperor is Shaoho (Shaohao); in winter, its emperor is Zhuanxu. This is the account given in the "Chapter of the Five Emperors" (*Wudi Pian*). Furthermore, Kong Anguo's preface to the *Book of Documents* (*Shangshu Xu*) states: "The writings of Shaoho, Zhuanxu, Gaoxin, Tang, and Yu are called the Five Canons (*Wudian*)." This account excludes the Yellow Emperor from the Five Emperors and counts Shaoho instead, constituting yet another independent theory. The reason Sima Qian recorded the Five Emperors was that he relied upon the words of Confucius, and the reason he did not record the Three Sovereigns was that he did not adopt claims lacking reliable basis. Regarding what is referred to in the "Chapter of the Five Emperors," Ke Weiqi stated: "This speaks of sages who, through dynastic revolution, changed their titles and modeled them upon the emperors of the Five Phases — it does not represent the fixed names of the Five Emperors."
