弘法大師｜投獨鈷（なげどつこ）霊験（れいげん）
當所の温泉（おんせん）出現（しゆつげん）の来由（らいゆ）を土人｜相傳（あいつた）ふところは 往昔（そのかみ） 弘法
大師 求法（ぐほう）のため入唐（につたう）をいたされ明州（みんしう） に 於て船上より
本國の方へむかひ吾（わが）求法 衆生済度（しじやうさいど） に霊験（れいげん）あらば諸
佛（ぶつ）是を結縁（けちえん）の地へ導（みちび）き給へと御所｜持（ぢ）の獨鈷（とくこ）を虚空（こくう）
へ投（なげ）られ爾（しか）して后（のち）御帰朝（ごきてう）のうへ其 落所（らくしよ）を心眼（しんがん）に観（み）まひ
峩々（がゝ）たる険阻（けんそ）森々（しん〳〵）たる樹下（じゆか）の荊棘（けいきよく）を踏（ふみ）わけ蒙暗（もうあん）
たる此 深谷（しんこく）へ入 給へば 俄（にはか）に山河（さんか）震動（しんどう）して魔風（まふう）烈（はげ）しく

弘法大師 独鈷投げの霊験
当地の温泉出現の由来を土地の人々が代々語り継いでいることには、昔、弘法大師が仏法を求めるために中国へ渡られ、明州において船上から日本の方角へ向かい「私の求法と衆生済度に霊験があるならば、諸仏よ、これ（独鈷）を縁ある地へ導いてください」とお持ちの独鈷を空中へ投げられた。そして後に帰国された後、その落下地点を心眼で見定めて、険しく高い山々や鬱蒼とした樹木の下の茨を踏み分け、暗いこの深い谷へお入りになると、突然山川が震動し、魔風が激しく吹いた。

The Miracle of Kōbō Daishi's Thrown Dokko (Ritual Implement)
According to what the local people have passed down through generations about the origins of the hot springs at this location: Long ago, Kōbō Daishi traveled to Tang China to seek Buddhist teachings, and while aboard ship at Mingzhou, he faced toward Japan and threw his dokko (ritual vajra) into the air, praying "If my seeking of the Dharma and salvation of sentient beings shall have spiritual efficacy, may all Buddhas guide this to a place of karmic connection." Later, after his return to Japan, he discerned the landing place with his mind's eye, and tramping through thorny undergrowth beneath the dense trees of the steep and rugged mountains, when he entered this dark deep valley, suddenly the mountains and rivers shook and a demonic wind blew fiercely.
