**Entry 1: Nezumi no Te (Mouse's Paw)**
Ancient name: Sakura-kai (Cherry Blossom Shell)
〔Local name in Chikuzen Province〕: Nezumi-kai (Mouse Shell)
〔*Roppyaku-kaishin*〕
○ According to *Tanshikiura-tsutsumi*: This belongs to the clam family. Its shape resembles a *hinōgi* (cypress fan), has no ears (auricles), is white or brownish in color, and has a thick shell. No large specimens exist. Along the coast of Chikuzen Province, it is called "Sakura-kai."
○ Sekiju states: The shape resembles that of the Kinchaku-kai (Purse Shell), with no ears, a thick shell, and six or seven grooves and ridges. The outer surface is white with a dull luster; the inner surface is brown or white with a luster.
There is also a variety with a snow-white outer surface bearing fine brown markings and a dull luster, whose inner surface is light brown with a luster.
There is further a variety whose outer surface is white with reddish-brown or purplish-brown coloration, smooth and lustrous, while the inner surface is brown with a luster. The size does not exceed one or two *bu* to seven or eight *bu*. It is found in abundance along the shores of Shika-ura and Ashiya-ura in Chikuzen Province, as well as at various other coastal locations. It is also found in the Southern Sea and Eastern Sea regions, but not as abundantly as along the Chikuzen coast. Specimens with both valves joined together are rare. Similarly, shells that are exceptionally thick are rare. Shells with mottled markings are uncommon.
