  方エ移其内ニ而又一人少も増りニ候得者又々残も同様ニ   相成候如此故誰懈り申ニ而無之候而も次第ニ美麗ニ   成行候食物其外物数一々不及書顕悉皆右之   道理ニ候間十人之内一人目立候品致着候輩者以之   外之不調法ニ候尤有合候古キを着破無是非大概成   を相用申ニ而も可有之候得共自今者定目之通古キ   品一両年相用其後拵候ハ木綿布紙子之外決而   停止ニ候今度改而急度倹約一統ニ申渡候上万々一   近辺ゟ定目破候得者我等存迄雲泥之相違候間   璧平日無難ニ相勤候共定目を背候一事之不   調法を以急度其沙汰可有之候間常々無怠   慢此段能々得其意相守可申候且又倹約ニ付麁   服相用小身之輩者無人ニ而往来可有之候間外様   之輩江対し不礼無之様ニ心付尤ニ候軽キ者江慇懃   過候而も夫者一時之笑意ニ而相済別而不苦事候此   段者了簡之上之儀不及申候得共乍序書   載候間是又能々相慎可申者也      七月廿日   

現代語訳

(前ページより続き)   方へ移り、その内にまた一人でも少しでも増りになれば、またまた残りも同様になる。このようなわけで、誰も懈(おこた)り申すわけではなくても、次第に美麗になっていくものである。食物その外の物数も一々書き顕すに及ばず、悉(ことごと)く皆、右の道理(同じ理屈)である。したがって、十人の内一人でも目立つ品を着る者は、もってのほかの不調法(不作法・不届き)である。もっとも、有り合わせの古いものを着破り、是非なく大概(並)のものを用いることもあろうが、今より以降は定目の通り、古い品を一両年(一、二年)使い続け、その後に新調する場合は木綿・布・紙子(かみこ)以外は決して停止(禁止)である。今回、改めて急度(きっと)倹約を一統に申し渡した上は、万々一にも近辺(外様の近隣)の方から定目を破るようであれば、我等の存する限り、雲泥の相違(天と地ほどの差)があるとみなす。平日(日頃)無難に勤めていても、定目に背くという一事の不調法をもって、急度その沙汰(処分)を行うであろう。常々怠慢なくこの段を十分にその意を得て守るべきである。なお、倹約につき麁服(粗末な服)を用い、小身(身分の低い)の者は供を連れずに往来することもあろうが、外様の輩(よそ者)に対して無礼のないよう心掛けることが肝要である。身分の軽い者へあまりに慇懃(いんぎん)に過ぎても、それは一時の笑いとなって済む話で、特に苦しいことではない。この段は了簡(心得)の上のことで申すまでもないが、序(ついで)ながら書き載せるので、これまたよくよく慎むべきものである。      七月二十日

(Continued from the previous page)   — and should even one more person among them follow suit with even a slight increase in expenditure, then the rest will inevitably do the same. In this way, even without anyone being deliberately negligent or lax, things will gradually tend toward greater luxury and splendor. There is no need to enumerate each case regarding food and other goods; the very same logic applies in its entirety to all such matters. Therefore, any person among ten who wears conspicuously fine attire is guilty of extraordinary impropriety and misconduct. It is understood that there may be cases where one has no choice but to wear out old garments that happen to be on hand and then turn to something of ordinary quality; however, from this point forward, in accordance with the regulations, old items are to be used for one or two years, and any new items made thereafter shall, without exception, be restricted to cotton, cloth, or *kamiko* (paper clothing). Now that we have once again issued these strict frugality orders to all retainers without exception, should anyone in the vicinity ever come to violate these regulations, we regard the difference between such conduct and proper conduct to be as vast as that between clouds and mud — that is, as great as heaven and earth. Even if a person has otherwise served without difficulty in their daily duties, a single act of misconduct in defying these regulations shall be met with swift and appropriate disciplinary action. Each person is therefore to understand this matter thoroughly and observe it without laxity or negligence at all times. Furthermore, in keeping with the spirit of frugality, those of lower rank who wear plain and simple clothing may find themselves traveling without attendants; in such cases, it is important that they take care to avoid showing any discourtesy toward outsiders and those of other domains. Even if one were to be excessively polite and courteous toward a person of low standing, that would merely invite a momentary laugh and would pass without particular difficulty. This point goes without saying for anyone who has given the matter proper thought, but it has been written down here in passing; take heed and conduct yourself accordingly with all due care.      Seventh month, twentieth day
