1. On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, in connection with the same matter as the previous day (the frugality orders), the monthly duty senior retainer (*tsukiban go-karō*) Sakai Genba (Tomotaka) issued the following written notice to all departments:
In response to the strict frugality orders that have now been issued, regarding the operating expenses (*go-nyūyō*) of the various departments: each department has been assigned an annual budget allotment (*kippu*); all official business is to be conducted within that allotment, and should any department succeed in reducing expenditures even by a small amount, this shall be regarded as a mark of each person's diligent effort and will be commended. The intent of this notice is to be thoroughly understood and observed. For further details, instructions have been conveyed to the magistrates (*go-bugyō*) and to Tochiya Han'emon, so all concerned parties are to consult with them accordingly. That is all.
Seventh month, twenty-first day.
2. On the same day, the *furegashira* (liaison officers), as well as the *go-kinshū* (personal attendants), *o-temawari* (close-range attendants), *omotezamurai* (outer-hall samurai), *go-rusuban* (castle guard retainers), and the *go-bangumi* attendants — all of whom had heretofore been provided with a box lunch (*bentō*) from the domain when performing escort duties during the lord's outdoor rounds (*nomawari*) — submitted a notice expressing their wish to bring their own lunches for escort duties henceforth, in keeping with the special frugality orders that had been issued.
Upon this being brought to the lord's attention, he found it admirable and praiseworthy, and issued an order that they were to do exactly as they proposed.
3. On the twenty-seventh day of the same month, at Tenryū-ji temple in Shinagawa, a memorial service (*go-hōji*) was held for the fiftieth death anniversary (*go-ki*) of Lady Kenshō-in, from the evening of the twenty-sixth until that morning. The same ceremony was likewise conducted at Tenryū-ji temple in Matsuoka, and an *o-chātō* (tea-and-hot-water offering) ceremony was also held at Kōken-ji temple.
4. On the twenty-ninth day of the same month, a circular letter arrived from the *ō-metsuke* (chief inspector) regarding the matter of persons attending to the sick (*kanbyōnin*):
Regarding requests for absence due to attending to the sick: such absences shall not be recognized for anyone other than one's own parents, spouse, or children. However— (continued on the next page)
