地震（ぢしん）の鯰（なまず）へ遣（つかは）す状（じやう）
昨日（さくじつ）者（は）御地震（ごぢしん）御（をん）揮懸（ゆりかけ）被成（なされ）
寔（まこと）に激〻（ゆさ〳〵）二而（の）目（め）に逢（あひ）奉怐候（びつくりしたてまつりそろ）
乍（さり）＿レ去（ながら）震返（ゆりかへ）し御軽被成下（おんかるくなしくだされ）膳椀（せんわん）
擾（かゝらはしげ）なき仕合（しあわせ）に奉存候 依之（これによつて）
鯰（なまず）かな一折（ひとをり）奉押瓢箪（ひやうたんにおさへたてまつり）候 右（みぎ）
御礼（をんれい）如此（かくのごとく）御座候（ござそろ）已上（いじやう）

### 地震の鯰へ遣わす状（手紙）
昨日はご地震をお揺り掛けになられ、まことにゆさゆさと、目に遭い、びっくり仕り候。
さりながら、揺り返しをお軽くしていただき、膳や椀など、煩わしいことなく済みました仕合せに存じ候。
これによって、鯰かな一折り、瓢箪にてお押さえ申し上げ候。右、お礼かくのごとくにてございます。以上。

「鯰かな」というのは「なまざかな（鯰という魚）の地口（ことばあそび）」である。「瓢箪に押さえ申し上げ候」とは、「高覧に備え申し上げ候（ご覧に供える）」という意味の地口である。そもそも地震のところへ送る手紙には、地口を第一に書くことが古くからの慣例である。

### A Letter Addressed to the Catfish of the Earthquake
Yesterday, you were so kind as to give us an earthquake shaking, and we were truly rattled from side to side, left utterly astonished and bewildered.
Nevertheless, as the aftershocks were mercifully mild, and our trays and bowls came to no troublesome harm, we consider ourselves most fortunate.
In light of this, we humbly offer you one folded piece of "catfish poem," pressing it down with a gourd. Such is our expression of gratitude. Respectfully yours.

"Catfish poem" (鯰かな) is a pun on "namaza-kana" (鯰ざかな), meaning "catfish, a type of fish." The phrase "pressing it down with a gourd" (瓢箪に押さえ申し上げ候) is likewise a wordplay on "humbly presenting it for your esteemed inspection" (高覧に備え申し上げ候). In general, it is an ancient custom that letters sent to places struck by earthquakes must foremost include such wordplay (ji-guri).
