和漢三才圖會濕草類ニ曰
莢（シバ）《割書：和｜名｜》之波 一名類草
田 廢（スダレテ）生ス草ヲ曰莢ト今俗用凢
芝ノ字ヲ《割書：音｜支｜》芝ヲ瑞草也凢荒
野岸ニ雜草自ラ生ス牛鹿常ニ
食之故夏野ノ菜不過數
寸に頗る如シ青■ノ此則可當
是ニ所々近邉多有之能
似テ芝ニ柔者別ニ有 結縷草（コウライシバ）
此ハ別物也只芝ト已稱スル者
多庭山ニ植此又別物也

『和漢三才図会』湿草類に曰く
莢（シバ）【和名】シハ 一名類草
田が荒廃して生える草を莢という。今俗に一般的に
芝の字を【音：シ】芝を瑞草なり。一般的に荒れた
野原や岸に雑草が自然に生える。牛や鹿が常に
これを食べるため、夏野の菜は数寸を
過ぎない。青■のようである。これは正にそれに
当たる。所々の近辺に多くある。
芝によく似ているが柔らかいものが別にある。結縷草（コウライシバ）
これは別物である。ただ芝と称するものが
多く、庭や山に植える。これもまた別物である。
『広益地錦抄』に曰く
残雪桃（ザンセツトウ）

【Grass Category】
The "Wakan Sansai Zue" (Illustrated Encyclopedia of Chinese and Japanese) states in the Wet Grass section:
Kyō (Shiba) 【Japanese name】 Shiwa, also called Ruisō
Grass that grows in abandoned fields is called kyō. Today, commonly
the character for shiba 【pronunciation: shi】 represents auspicious grass. Generally, miscellaneous grasses grow naturally in wild fields and on riverbanks. Because cattle and deer constantly eat them, summer field plants do not exceed several inches in height. It resembles blue ■. This is exactly what corresponds to it. There are many in various nearby areas.
There is another type that resembles shiba but is softer - Korean grass (kōraishiba).
This is a different plant. What is commonly called just "shiba" is often planted in gardens and mountains. This is also a different plant.
The "Kōeki Chikin-shō" states:
