**The Ceremony of the U-no-Tsue (New Year's Staff)**
At the half-quarter of the Hour of the Tiger (with an announcement of attendance made once), the shrine officials (shashi), each dressed in court cap and robes (ikan), assemble at the shrine precincts. After all have gathered, they take their seats in the Transparent Corridor (tōrō) — the Hōri (officiating priest) taking his seat in the Watadono (connecting hall). The shoshi (lower-ranking official) advances to the interior of the Chinese-style gate (karato) and inquires as to when the u-no-tsue (the New Year's staff) should be erected. Next, the onmyōji (yin-yang diviner) performs a purification ritual (kiyoharae) at the designated place. After the u-no-tsue [ceremony], the onmyōji enters through the karato and ritually purifies the bodies of the shrine officials.

**The Fifteenth Day of the First Month**
After the proceedings at the Mihyakuya (御籍屋, the shrine record hall) are concluded, the shoshi official in charge of the ritual hand-washing (temizu) prepares the water for the on-duty shrine official (goryō tōban shashi) in the evening. After the hand-washing is completed, those remaining take their seats on the round cushions (enzа) laid out for the offering. The seat for the offering is taken by the chief Negi (head priest). The proceedings at the Mihyakuya follow the same order as on the seventh day.
The appointed hour is the Hour of the Tiger (note: the exact time varies depending on whether the Otana-e and Ojin-hō ceremonies run early or late; in recent years it has generally been the Hour of the Hare). The officials assemble at the shrine precincts, and after each shrine official has donned their court robes and all are assembled, they take their seats in the Transparent Corridor (the Hōri takes his seat in the Watadono). The shoshi advances to the interior of the karato and inquires about the ceremony of dispatching the divine offerings (shinju hassen no gi) — the Hōri does the same. Next comes the dispatching of the divine offerings (both left and right sides). Next, the custodian (azukari) presents the sacred key to the Hōri. Then the Hōri advances and opens the sacred door (each official prostrates themselves as is customary). Then the Kannagi (神主) and the Hōri advance and enter the inner sanctuary (go-naijin). Next, the Negi and the Gon-negi take their places on the great floor (ōyuka); next, the Gon-hōri and the Kataoka Negi; next, the Kataoka Hōri and the Kibune Negi — each awaiting on the steps (kizahashi). Next, the Kibune Hōri and the Shingū Negi wait below the steps (left and right sides), while the remaining officials take their seats in rows (left and right). The heads of the seclusion-and-abstinence group (sanrō shōjin no kashira) take their seats in rows inside the karato (east side up, facing north). Next, the kayu-tsue (rice gruel staff) is presented — two are placed on a round cushion by the Negi's side, also placed on a round tray, and both the cushion and staff are advanced into the inner sanctuary; the tray is then passed down to the Hōri's side. The Hōri's side then does the same, and the tray is passed down to the Negi's side. From the inner sanctuary, the gruel... [continues on next page]
