**[Right folio]** In that ceremony, the jinin (shrine servants) carry the ranko (覧筥, viewing box) and present it before the Mokudai. They take out the inkstone, grind ink, and write down the names of those currently in attendance and the names of the shōjin-tōnin (ritual abstinence leaders). When finished, they rise from their seats. Note, however, that at present only the names of the shōjin-tōnin are written; the names of the shrine officials are written at the lodging. There is a separate transmitted document (sōden no sho) for the duties performed by the Mokudai. They proceed to the courtyard of the chōya and announce in sequence — (standing lantern stands with bases [musubi-tōdai] are erected before the seats of the Kannagi, Hōri, and Mokudai). Next, the target is hung at the archery range — (this is the role of the jinin; the location of the archery range differs according to whether the year is yin or yang — either the western or eastern side of the road. The western side corresponds to the Negi's seating area. "Because of yang" — meaning yang here is yin [i.e., the yang direction corresponds to the yin side in practice]). Next, each of the shrine officials leaves the chōya, performs ritual hand-washing (temizu) at the foot of Nara Bridge, and performs the rolled-cap-string ceremony (keneи / maki-ei) beneath the bridge and under the kashiwa trees — (this is done by the shoshi and bettō; it is merely a formality). They proceed to the archery range. The Kannagi, Negi, and Hōri take their seats in the temporary pavilion (akuza): the Kannagi in the center, the Hōri to the left, the Negi to the right; the lesser shrine officials of the Negi's faction sit in the western seats, those of the Hōri's faction in the eastern seats. Next, the Kannagi in front and the Hōri behind stand together and shoot at the target — (one arrow each). They return to their seats. After that, the Senior Negi (Shō-negi) and those below each stand in a mixed row and shoot at the target in a single line, then return to their seats — (first, the Senior Negi shoots one arrow; then each person down to the Ujigami-hōri shoots one arrow in turn. Then the Senior Negi shoots the second arrow (otoya), and those below down to the Ujigami-hōri shoot their second arrows in turn, after which they return to their seats — note that the junior-ranked persons stand). The arrow-collecting pages (yatori-kodomo) take up the arrows and present them to the shrine officers. Next, thick paper (2 sheets), kikujūshoku (chrysanthemum-patterned miscellaneous paper, 1 book), placed on a tōne tray, are passed around. Then the san (饊, a fried confection) — (placed in small vessels on a tray and passed around; this is the go-san of the go-tanakai). The miscellaneous paper (zōshi) is distributed to the arrow-collecting pages. The thick paper constitutes the stipend gift (roku-mono). Next, the Kannagi and Hōri shoot at the target — (this time the shooting begins with the Hōri). Next, the Senior Negi and below, with Negi and Hōri mixed together, shoot — (this time the shooting begins with the Ujigami-hōri; the Ujigami-hōri also shoots the second arrow). Each finishes shooting and returns to their seat. When the arrow-collecting pages present the arrows, miscellaneous paper is distributed. Next, the go-san is passed around (as at the beginning). Next— **[Left folio]** Shiri-i (尻居, a final round of sake from a ladle) — (placed in a ladle, distributed by the junior Mokudai (ko-mokudai); prior to this, two small earthenware cups and their stands are passed and placed to the left and right). --- **Procedures for the Rain Ceremony (Ugi no Shidai)** This ceremony is conducted in the go-shoya (御所屋, the lord's hall/shelter). The seating arrangement is as follows: one tatami mat in the center, with three tatami mats each to the left and right for the Kannagi, Negi, and Hōri. The Negi's faction takes the western seats, north at the head, facing east; the Hōri's faction takes the eastern seats, north at the head, facing west. The next seats — the matting area for the arrow-collecting pages — is in the long hall (nagayuka), but as the space is narrow, the arrow-collecting pages sit in two rows on the eastern side: the Negi's faction in the front row, the Hōri's faction behind, each with north at the head and facing west. When it is time to shoot (idate), they shoot from the western veranda. The procedure is as follows: first, the Kannagi and Hōri rise from their seats, go out to the veranda, shoot one arrow each, and then return to their seats. Next, the Senior Negi and those below rise from their seats, go out to the veranda, and shoot.
