The Seventh Day of the Seventh Month
At the upper hour of the Rabbit (approximately 6:00 a.m.), the shrine doors are opened for the divine ritual. The shrine officials each don their formal court dress (sokutai), and after the ritual announcement of the visit is made three times, they assemble at the侍所 (samurai quarters/waiting hall). When all twenty-one officers have gathered, the所司大夫 (Administrative Officer) inquires of the head priest regarding the ritual for dispatching the divine offerings. The head priest responds, and the shrine officials rise from their seats and take their places at the土屋 (clay house/earthen hall) seat (the procedure being as customary). Next, the divine offerings are dispatched (shrine servants follow behind the sacred leading sword, while the禰宜 carry the sacred offering boxes on both left and right sides). Next, the陰陽師 (yin-yang diviner) performs a purification ritual over the divine offerings (the location being as customary). Next, the shrine officials each rise from their seats, and the禰宜 (senior priests) and祝 (celebrant priests) divide into two groups to cross the bridge. At the foot of the Tama Bridge (玉橋), the陰陽大夫 performs a purification of the shrine officials' bodies. Then, the禰宜 proceed via the Tama Bridge, while the祝 proceed via the Watadono (渡殿, connecting corridor), conducting the rounds of worship at the various shrines as customary. They take their seats at the透廊 (open corridor) and渡殿. Next, the預 (keeper/official in charge) presents the sacred key to the祝. The祝 then rises, opens the sacred doors, and descends to the土居 (earthen area at the base of the shrine). The head priest and the祝 line up side by side and bow once, then enter the inner sanctuary. Next, the正禰宜 (Chief Negi) and the権禰宜 (Deputy Negi) line up side by side, bow once, and take their seats on the大床 (main platform).
