Ritual at a Certain Shrine (Chōyō / Double-Ninth Festival)
First, after the azukari-dayū (預大夫, the supervising official) passes over the sacred key (御鍵), each person rises from their seat and proceeds to the said shrine. The ryōkan (両官, the negi and hafuri) and the tengu (転供, those bearing the transferred offerings) and others take their seats at the haiden (拝殿, the oratory). However, the hafuri proceeds directly, holding the sacred key, to the tsuchii (土居, the earthen mound or stone platform at the foot of the stairs), performs a single bow, ascends the steps, and performs a single bow at the ōtoko (大床, the main floor/dais). (At this time, the hem of the robe is not gathered up.) The sacred doors are opened. (The negi, tengu, and others prostrate themselves.) Upon completion, while remaining seated, a single bow is performed, and one descends to the tsuchii. At that moment, the negi rises from his seat, proceeds to the tsuchii, and, standing side by side, they perform a single bow together, ascend the steps, perform a single bow at the ōtoko, and enter the inner sanctuary (内陣). (Each person performs a single bow while remaining seated.)
Next, the hafuri rolls up the御簾 (misu, the sacred blind/curtain).
Next, after the presentation of the divine offerings (神供) is complete, the sacred blind is lowered again.
Regarding the procedure: The divine offerings are placed into the御櫃 (ohitsu, a sacred container/box); the tengu (those bearing transferred offerings) receive and carry them, proceeding to the ōtoko, where they are passed to the shrine priest (祠官). The ryōkan then receive and carry them, placing them upon the御台盤 (o-daiban, the sacred offering table).
Next, the negi exits the inner sanctuary, performs a single bow at the ōtoko, the tsuchii, and other designated points, and returns to his original seat. During this time, the hafuri exits the inner sanctuary… [text continues on the next page]
