[The Bettō-dayū asks] on what day the Rinji-sai (Extraordinary Festival) should be performed, and the Kannagi (Chief Priest) answers "Yes" (in affirmation). The Hafuri-kata (Shrine Ritualists) perform the same procedure in the Watadono (Connecting Hall). Next, torches (taimatsu) are lit by the Sha-mu-dai (Administrative Representative) and placed in the small garden. Next, the Azukari-dayū advances and presents the sacred key (mi-kagi) to the Hafuri. (The Azukari-dayū proceeds from the western Offering Hall, through the Tōrō, exits below the shrine officials, passes through the Midare-mado and Norito-ya, puts on his footwear at the eastern end of the south veranda, and proceeds to the Watadono.) [The Azukari-dayū] then returns to his original position (no prostration upon advancing, but the usual prostration upon withdrawing). Next, the Hafuri rises from his seat, advances to the Doi (earthen platform), prostrates once, ascends to the Ō-yuka (main floor), prostrates once, removes the wrapping and cover of the sacred lock, and opens the sacred door with the key. All shrine officials prostrate themselves. The Hafuri then descends to the Doi. Next, the Kannagi rises from his seat, advances to the Doi, stands alongside the Hafuri, prostrates once, ascends to the Ō-yuka, prostrates once, and enters the Gon-naijin (Inner Sanctum). Next, the Shō-negi (Senior Priest) and Gon-negi (Associate Priest) rise from their seats and proceed to the foot of the stairs. The Gon-negi advances first, and both Negi stand side by side at the Doi and prostrate once. The Shō-negi takes the west position and the Gon-negi the east; they ascend and attend on the Ō-yuka. Next, the Gon-hafuri and Kataoka-negi ascend and attend on the second step from the top of the stairs. Next, the Kataoka-hafuri and Kifune-negi ascend and attend on the third step from the bottom of the stairs. Next, the Kifune-hafuri and Shingu-negi are positioned at the base of the left and right staircases. Next, in order: the Shingu-hafuri and Ōta-negi; the Ōta-hafuri and Wakamiya-negi; the Wakamiya-hafuri and Nara-negi; the Nara-hafuri and Sawada-negi; the Sawada-hafuri and Ujigami-negi; the Ujigami-hafuri and Sha-mu-dai — each taking their ranked positions in left-right order.

(Marginal note #1: Dated November, Meiji 21 [1888]. Regarding the round trays (marubane), the Shō-negi and Gon-negi are to remove them. The wooden trough (ki-fune) is handled by the Hafuri and Shingu-negi, to be placed in the narrow spaces of the balustrade (hazama-kōran) on both left and right sides. The small round cushions (ko-enza) on both left and right sides are abolished, and placed on the main floor [Ō-yuka].)
Next, the Kannagi and Hafuri roll up the sacred sudare (bamboo blind). Next, the sacred brooms and wiping cloths, loaded with round cushions (enza), are moved forward (on both left and right sides). Next, two sacred offering tables (mi-daiban) are brought out from the inner sanctum. (At this time, the ceremonial display items [keibut-su] are brought out and placed on the offering tables; however, the two items — sakaki (sacred tree branch) and hollyhock (aoi) — are not brought out.) Each official removes the Negi-kata [offerings/items]. Next, the sudare is lowered. Next, oil lamps (aburishoku) are brought forward (handled by the Negi-kata). The two officials on the Ō-yuka hold these and illuminate the interior sanctum. When the cleaning of the inner sanctum is complete, the two officials on the Ō-yuka lower the oil lamps. In order of rank, they descend to the Sha-mu-dai. (At this time, the Azukari-dayū comes to the base of the eastern pillar of the Gon-den [Secondary Shrine] and receives the brooms and other items, then withdraws to the Offering Hall.) The brooms and other items are taken outside.
(Marginal note #2: In the same year [Meiji 21], after the Shingu-hafuri, Ōta-negi and others have finished cleaning the balustrade, those who have small round cushions (ko-enza) place them on top of the round trays (marubane) on the balustrade.)
The shrine officials outside the inner sanctum sweep the inner and outer surfaces of the sacred doors, the balustrades, and so forth. The brooms and other items are replaced on the round cushions as before, and placed in the spaces of the balustrade (the Wakamiya-negi and Hafuri complete this placement). Next, the sudare is rolled up. Next, two offering tables are advanced (the Tone [junior official] washes and purifies them in the Mono-imi-gawa river from the western Offering Hall; however, when the Rinji-sai is performed by order of the Imperial Court, this is done in conjunction with the offering of hi-kage-kazura [club moss] vines, sakaki, and so forth at this time). Next, the sudare is lowered. Next, the Ujigami-hafuri and Sha-mu-dai advance to the Doi and prostrate once (when in court dress [ikan], this is performed in yuki-nari [walking] style). They return to their original seats (in the Tōrō, Watadono, etc.). Shrine officials down to the Gon-negi return to their seats in order. The Shō-negi, Hafuri, and Kannagi take their seats at the norito-za (norito recitation seats). Next, the Gon-hafuri rises from the seat (before this, the Azukari-dayū presents the sacred key to the Gon-hafuri; the ceremony is the same as for the Shō-hafuri). The sacred door of the Gon-den (Secondary Shrine) is opened (same procedure as the main shrine). Next, the Gon-negi advances to the Doi of the Gon-den, stands alongside the Hafuri, prostrates once, and enters the inner sanctum. Next, the two officials of Kataoka [continue the procedure].
