**Rinji-sai (Extraordinary Festival)** *(Lower Rooster Day of the Eleventh Month)*
Around the hour of the Monkey (approximately 4 p.m.), the sacred doors are opened. Before this, the shrine servants (jinin) notify each shrine official (shashi) three times. The shrine officials (shashi) assemble at the侍所 (samurai-dokoro / attendants' hall) wearing formal court dress (sōtai). (When conducted at the command of the imperial court, they are summoned accordingly.) (They assemble at the office building [chōya]. One zōshō, two white-robed attendants [hakutei], and an umbrella-bearer [uchi-kasa-mochi] are summoned. However, it appears that attaching one zōshō each to the shrine master [kannagi] and below for the御祭与 [go-sai-yo] may be omitted.)
The white-robed attendants, at the stone step of Unekura (着沓), first make a lateral bow (yokohai) toward Nara Shrine, ascend from the western entrance of the侍所, proceed to the washroom, and perform the putting-on of socks (shitauzu) and ritual hand-washing (temizu). The shrine master (kannagi) and negi take up positions east and west (the kannagi to the north, the negi to the south); the shrine priests (shikan) of the negi group from the gonegi downward take their seats facing north on the south side (the Shingū negi is inside the threshold of the western bay); those from the gon-hafuri downward face the two main officials from the south side; the senior hafuri (shō-hafuri) takes his seat directly in the main hall (omoya) of the office. After all have assembled, the administrator (shoshi) comes and inquires whether the sacred offerings (jinkū) may be dispatched (from inside the threshold of the eastern bay). The kannagi answers, "They may proceed," and the administrator withdraws. The shrine priests all rise from their seats.
(It is said: when conducted by command of the imperial court, is one to proceed after following the sacred offerings?)
(The two main officials of Kibune proceed directly to Kibune.)
They make one prostration toward Nara Shrine (the two main officials prostrate side by side; the negi to the south, the hafuri to the north). Beginning with the shrine master, they proceed in order, make one bow (ichiyū) at the Second Torii Gate, and take their places at the土屋 (tsuchiya / earthen hall). (Footwear bow [kutsuyū], seated bow [zayū]. After the Kataoka negi comes the Shingū negi; after the Kataoka hafuri comes the Shingū hafuri.) Next the sacred offerings are dispatched. (The procedure is as follows: the administrator first returns from the侍所 to the office building; the senior hafuri inquires whether the sacred offerings are to be dispatched; the hafuri rises from his seat. At that time, the administrator attaches [something] at the south veranda hand-washing area. In the garden courtyard, the sakaki branch and hikage vine are passed over.) The hafuri takes up the sakaki and hikage vine and proceeds first; the tōne carries the sacred offering chest (o-hitsu) (at the Hajio vicinity, the negi group and hafuri group separate, and it is handed to the administrator-in-charge [sōdō bettō]); the jinin follow behind, and they pass through the Third Torii Gate, Second Torii Gate, the negi group's plank bridge (sunaoko-bashi), and at the foot of the Tama Bridge (Tamahashi), the yin-yang purification (in'yō-harae) is completed, and they then pass through the Tama Bridge and the inner part of the two-story gate (rōmon)—

—and through the gates, arriving at the Western Sacred Offering Hall (Nishi-o-tomo-dokoro). (The hafuri group's sacred offerings, upon arrival, are advanced to the Eastern Sacred Offering Hall [Higashi-o-tomo-dokoro].) The administrators, bettō, and others follow from behind; the daily offerings (nichi-ku) are placed into a plain chest (karabitsu) as usual, and they proceed from the Nicho-mon Gate (日御門) via the Taguchi route. The shrine priests rise from their seats (after the sacred offerings have all entered within the Sakura Gate). Each passes along the left and right plank bridges; at the vicinity of the Tama Bridge, the yin-yang priests perform a purification of the shrine officials' bodies. The negi pass through the Tama Bridge, the two-story gate (rōmon), and make one prostration at Tanao Shrine, then enter through the Middle Gate (Chūmon), and ascend and descend through the Tang-style door (karato), taking their seats in the transparent corridor (tōrō). The hafuri group passes through the Kataoka Connecting Bridge (Kataoka-watadono), makes a lateral bow at Kawao Shrine, enters through the Shingū Sacred Gate and Tang Gate, and takes their seats in the connecting bridge area. With the hem of the robe leading, they make the footwear bow (kutsuyū), ascend by knee-walking (shikkō), advance toward the front of their seats, prostrate once, and sit on circular cushions (enzа) by knee-walking. They make the seated bow (zayū), settle comfortably, and take up the hem. Next, the Azukari (deputy administrator) advances to the hafuri group's connecting bridge and presents the sacred key (o-kagi). The hafuri receives it and withdraws from the Azukari. Before this, the imiko (sacred child) takes their seat (at the foot of the eastern staircase). Next, the hafuri rises from his seat, advances to the doi, prostrates once, ascends to the ō-yuka, and prostrates once (while seated; however, the hem is not held). Next, the sacred doors are opened (first, the sacred lock wrapper and cover, etc., are removed, and the sacred key is applied). The shrine priests, tenson, and all those gathered in attendance move their seats and prostrate. (During the time the shrine priests are seated, the tenson take their seats at the Western Connecting Bridge [nishi-watadono]. After the sacred doors are opened, two junior attendants [gerō] advance to the hafuri group's sacred offering hall.) Next, the kannagi rises from his seat and advances to the doi. The hafuri descends to the doi; the kannagi and hafuri stand side by side, prostrate once, ascend to the ō-yuka, and prostrate once (while seated). They take up the hems of their robes and enter the inner sanctum (go-naijin). Next, the senior gon-negi (shō-gon-negi) rises from his seat and advances to stand in attendance at the ō-yuka. Next, the gon-hafuri and Tokioka-negi (continue below)...
