**[Right Page]** **Rite of the First Rabbit Day Niname-e Festival at a Certain Shrine** First, the two main officials (ryō-kan), accompanied by the tenson (relay offerings bearers), take their places at the worship hall (haiden). The shrine servants (jinin) advance into the garden courtyard and take hold of torches. The tōne (shrine functionary) holds the sacred offerings (jinkū) and stands in attendance. Next, the hafuri rises from his seat and advances to the doi (earthen platform) (the seated bow [zayū] and footwear bow [kutsuyū] are performed as usual). He prostrates once, ascends to the ō-yuka (main floor), prostrates once, and opens the sacred doors. (The negi, tenson, and others descend from their circular cushions [enzа] and prostrate.) The hafuri descends to the doi; the negi proceed forward; together they prostrate once, ascend to the ō-yuka, prostrate once, enter the inner sanctum (go-naijin), and prostrate once (while remaining seated). Next, the tenson advance to the doi and prostrate once. Next, the two main officials roll up the sacred blind (misu). Next, the tenson advance the sacred offering chests (o-hitsu) into the inner sanctum; the two main officials receive them and place them on the sacred food table (o-daiban). The tenson stand in attendance at the side of the doi. Next, the sacred blind is lowered; they prostrate once (while remaining seated) and withdraw from the inner sanctum. (The negi return to their seats at the worship hall. As part of that rite, they prostrate once at the ō-yuka, descend to the doi, and prostrate once. The hafuri remains at the ō-yuka and sets the o-daiban in place at the outer sanctuary [gejin].) Next, the tenson person presents to the hafuri the outer sanctum's sacred offering chest, and also (in the case of the Ujigami Shrine) the small chest of Komori sacred offerings, supplies them to the right side of the outer sanctum's o-daiban, and withdraws. (As the wrapped sacred lock is on the chest, it is removed and set aside in a convenient place.) The hafuri places the offerings on the o-daiban, prostrates once (while remaining seated), descends to the doi, prostrates once, and returns to his seat (at the worship hall). Next come the norito prayers (for Kataoka, after the Kataoka earth-purification rite [tsuchimatsuri] is completed). Next, the hafuri again proceeds forward (the haiyū bowing is performed as at the beginning). Next the tenson proceed forward (likewise). Then, after withdrawing the outer sanctum's sacred offerings, the o-daiban is set back in its proper place and they descend to the doi. **[Left Page]** Next, the negi proceed forward, prostrate at the doi, ō-yuka, and other stations, enter the inner sanctum, and roll up the sacred blind. Next, the tenson advance to the ō-yuka. The two main officials withdraw the sacred offerings and hand them to the tenson. (As there is a paper for wiping inside the chest, beneath the sacred cup, it is removed within the inner sanctum before the offerings are cleared.) Next, the sacred blind is lowered; the o-daiban is wiped; they prostrate once (while remaining seated) and withdraw from the inner sanctum; they prostrate at the ō-yuka, doi, and other stations and return to their seats. However, the hafuri remains at the ō-yuka and closes the sacred doors. (All present prostrate.) When applying the sacred lock, the tenson person presents the wrapped sacred lock. Next, the hafuri prostrates at the ō-yuka and doi, and then withdraws. For the small shrines' sacred offerings: at the Niname-e Festival and on New Year's Day, offerings are made at 36 shrines; at the Aoi Festival, at 42 shrines. At the御棚会 (Otana-e) on the 14th day of the first month, the Niname-e Festival, New Year's Day, and the Aoi Festival, Komori sacred offerings (komori-jinkū) are presented at certain shrines.
