として放置しておく時は、必ず天然痘に感染するのである。よって、その真偽を見分けることが肝要である。それぞれこの種を牛痘とは言うけれども、そのむかし牛の痘瘡を採取して以来、数千万の人体を経てきたのであるから、牛は名前だけのものであって、一種の良性痘瘡と名付けるべきものである。その種痘法を正しく行えば、億万人に及んでも過ちがあることはない。世の人々は疑うことなかれ。嘉永三年戌正月
