○ Changes Along the Hakone Highway
The distance from Tokyo to the seven hot springs of Hakone in Sagami Province is approximately twenty-some ri to Yumoto. Along this route, as all the stations lie on the government road, travelers had long come and gone in great numbers, freely making use of horse-drawn carriages, rickshaws, palanquins, and the like for their convenience. However, in recent years, not only has a railway opened between Tokyo and Yokohama, but a line has already been extended to Kōzu in Sagami Province, with three round trips daily. As a result, travelers have gained even greater convenience, and virtually everyone now travels by steam train. Consequently, the post stations along the former route have fallen into great decline, and the businesses of horse-drawn carriages and rickshaws have rapidly collapsed. This Kōzu...
