Observe the manners of carpenters! Dressed in Yuki cotton-padded garments with Hakata obi sashes, wearing navy blue hakama-trousers and white tabi socks. When they gather for their Taishi-ko meetings, they start work late in the morning and take long breaks, saying they won't work unless their wages are increased. They drink sake once or twice daily, showing nothing but selfishness without fear of heaven. Even when you request their services ten days in advance, they barely show up for one day, and unless you humor them, they spend half the day idle. Accordingly, the construction of townhouses also becomes a competition of vanity - with double rafters wrapped in copper, two or three-story buildings with Chinese-style gables. The hinoki cypress pillars are without knots, and their height is exactly twice the length of old standards. Looking at these sturdy wooden constructions, they resemble palace grounds or shrine worship halls. It is natural that they have not even a mustard seed's worth of compassion, for they do not listen to the deep teachings of the way of benevolence and righteousness. The family traditions of wealthy households in society have become corrupt.
