宇宙の間には災害が絶えることなく、地震もまたその一つである。微小（小さな）地震はいくらか恐れるに足らないとはいえ、激烈（強い）ものに至っては、屋舎（家屋）を壊し、人命を傷つけ、それに続いて必ずや火災が起こる。実に天地の間における一大災害である。しかしながら、人々があらかじめその弱い・強いの前兆を知る者は少ない。西洋人の説によれば、地震が発生しようとする時に当たって、磁石の吸引力が失われる（抜ける）由を——
