Many livestock perished. The hot springs of Iyo Province were buried underground and then re-emerged. Over five hundred thousand kei (a unit of area) of farmland in Tosa Province were all submerged and became sea. That evening, a sound like a drum was heard from the east. The northwest two faces of the island of Izu naturally expanded by over three hundred jō, forming yet another new island. It is said that the drum-like sound was the echo of the gods creating this island. Since this concerns a very ancient era, we can only know of it through written records. In a book called "Kuni no Shiori" (A Guide to the Provinces), written during the Kansei era by a man named Yoshioka Genshū, in the section on "Dekishima" (Emerged Island) in Satsuma Province, the following is recorded: "In a past year (which, upon investigation, was during the Anei era), after the great eruption of Sakurajima in this province, the surrounding sea occasionally boiled up, the seawater seethed violently, fire burst forth on the sea's surface, all the water of the great ocean became scalding hot, and fish of every size in the sea perished without exception. Carried by the force of the boiling sea, soil and sand surged up from the seafloor more than a hundred fathoms deep, and seven new islands were born. The largest among them measured one ri and seven gō in circumference, while the others measured one and a half ri, or in smaller cases, less than one ri. Afterward, the boiling of the sea subsided, and those islands solidified into land. At first, the islands had no vegetation whatsoever, being covered only in white sand, but birds came from somewhere and took up residence. Gradually, plants and trees flourished, and fresh water began to spring forth. As a result, a shrine was built on the new island from Satsuma (Gūshū), and a shrine keeper was installed; people began to come to worship. Before long, people will surely come to live there. This Sakurajima also came into being in the second year of the Yōrō era (718 CE), when the sea burned, heaven and earth were plunged into darkness, and within a single night, a great mountain with a circumference of seven ri surged forth and was named Sakurajima. Today the island has a large population and abundant farmlands. In addition to this island, there are two smaller islands nearby, said to have emerged during the Bunji era." When one tells these things to others, about half do not believe them. Nevertheless, since the world is vast, one cannot firmly insist that such things are impossible. It is said that there was once a great country in the sea between Holland and Japan, which in recent years sank beneath the waves, and now only the peaks of two or three tall mountains that once stood in that country appear here and there above the surface of the sea. Newly...
