Item: When an octagonal object has sides of 6 sun each, and 3-sun gold foil is to be applied to it, how many sheets of foil are required?
[Figure of an octagon — along the right vertical side:] 6 sun
[The following two lines appear above the figure:]
○ The area is 173 square sun, 8 bu, 3 rin
○ 19 sheets, 3 bu, 1 rin of 3-sun foil are required
Method: Place 6 sun on the left and right (i.e., square 6), which gives 36. Multiply this by 2, giving 72. Divide this by the coefficient for octagons, 4.142, and you will find the area to be 173 square sun, 8 bu, 3 rin. Further divide this by 9 (the area in square sun of a 3-sun foil sheet), and you will find that 19 sheets, 3 bu, 1 rin are required.
The above calculation method is as described; however, in practice, one should also allow for an appropriate overage.

Section 20: On Timber
Item: When there are 400 pieces of 3-sun square timber of 2-ken length, and one wishes to convert these into 4-sun square timber of 2-ken length, how many pieces of 4-sun square timber would there be?
○ The answer is 225 pieces of 4-sun square timber.
Method: Place 3 sun on the left and right (i.e., square 3), giving 9. Multiply this by 400 pieces, giving 3,600. Set this value aside (to the right). Then separately, place 4 sun in two positions and multiply, giving 16. Divide the previously obtained 3,600 by 16, and you will find the answer to be 225 pieces of 4-sun square timber.
Item: When there are 7 pieces of 8-sun square timber of 3-ken length, and one wishes to convert into 5-sun square timber of 2-ken length — [continued on next page]
