He renounced his position and became a monk, becoming a disciple of Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) and changing his name to Shinnyō. The Emperor appointed his younger brother, Prince Ōtomo, as Crown Prince. He made his daughter, Imperial Princess Uchiko, the Sai-in priestess of Kamo Shrine, equivalent to the Sai-gū priestess of Ise. This was the beginning of the Sai-in institution. This Imperial Princess excelled in literary arts and was skilled at composing poetry.
In the second year (of Kōnin era), in the first month, an envoy from Bohai arrived. In the fifth month, Major Counselor and General of the Right Tamura-maro passed away. The Emperor deeply mourned his death and bestowed much silk cloth, rice, and other goods, having him buried in Kurusu village in Uji district. By imperial edict, armor, swords, spears, and bows and arrows were placed in the coffin, and he was buried facing east toward the imperial capital. This man's physical bearing and character were extraordinary - he was five shaku and eight sun tall, with a chest thickness of one shaku and two sun. His eyes were like those of a hawk, and his beard was golden-green in color. When angry, even birds and beasts would cower in fear; when jesting and laughing, even children and women would become attached to him. He was fifty-four years old when he died. In the eleventh month, the Emishi of Ōshū rebelled. Bunnya no Watamaro was...
