歳ニテ即位（ソクイ）シ給フ。外祖良房 摂政（セツシヤウ）ス。是藤原氏摂政

**清和天皇** 文徳天皇の皇太子である。御諱は惟仁（これひと）。母は染殿の后、藤原明子であり、太政大臣藤原良房の娘である。生まれてわずか九か月で皇太子に立てられた。天安二年（858年）八月、文徳天皇が崩御された。同年十一月、皇太子が九歳で即位された。外祖父である良房が摂政となった。これが藤原氏による摂政の始まりである。日本において幼少にして帝位に就くことは、この天皇を最初とする。伊勢大神宮ならびに諸々の山陵に、即位の旨を告げられた。外祖母である源潔姫（きよひめ）に正一位が贈られた。潔姫は嵯峨天皇の娘であり、良房の正室であり、染殿の后の母である。この年、智証大師（円珍）が唐より帰朝した。
貞観元年（859年）正月、年始の節会などは、諒闇（服喪期間）の最中であったため、すべて取りやめとなった。二月、大和の三輪明神などに正一位が授けられた。

### The 56th Sovereign
**Emperor Seiwa** — He was the Crown Prince of Emperor Montoku. His personal name (*imina*) was Korehito. His mother was the Consort of Somedono, Fujiwara no Akiko, daughter of the Grand Minister of State (Daijō-daijin) Fujiwara no Yoshifusa. He was designated Crown Prince only nine months after his birth. In the eighth month of Tennan 2 (858), Emperor Montoku passed away. In the eleventh month of the same year, the Crown Prince ascended to the throne at the age of nine. His maternal grandfather Yoshifusa assumed the role of regent (*sesshō*). This was the beginning of the Fujiwara clan's regency. Emperor Seiwa was the first in Japan to ascend to the imperial throne at such a young age. Notice of the enthronement was conveyed to the Grand Shrine of Ise and to various imperial mausolea. The Senior First Rank (*Shō-ichii*) was posthumously conferred upon his maternal grandmother, Minamoto no Kiyohime. Kiyohime was the daughter of Emperor Saga, the wife of Yoshifusa, and the mother of the Consort of Somedono. In this same year, Chishō Daishi (the monk Enchin) returned from Tang China.
In the first month of Jōgan 1 (859), the New Year's banquets and ceremonies were all cancelled, as the court was still in the period of imperial mourning (*ryōan*). In the second month, the Senior First Rank was conferred upon the Miwa Myōjin and other deities of Yamato Province.
