## Karamatsu-sō (唐松草, *Thalictrum* sp.) This plant is referred to as "Aki-Karamatsu" (Autumn Karamatsu-sō). There is also a "Haru-Karamatsu" (Spring Karamatsu-sō). Both share similar flower and leaf shapes, but while the Spring Karamatsu-sō drops all its flowers at once, the Autumn Karamatsu-sō grows vigorously and for a longer period. The *Chikinsho* (地錦抄) also explains this same distinction. 18th day of early autumn, Year of Kinoto-Tori (乙酉) Sketched from life at ■-tei [name of studio/pavilion illegible] --- **Recorded in the *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草), under the category of Wild Grasses [雑草]:** According to the *Yamato Honzō*: Yagara-matsu — The leaf shapes in the various illustrated specimens in the same book are identical to one another. Also called: Hagara-matsu. One person has suggested that the Japanese name "Tomaso" (外麻) was applied to this plant, but this is incorrect. It is said to resemble the leaf of a plant likened to a bird's foot. Upon investigation, "Tori-tomaso" (鳥外麻) is an entirely separate plant. Karamatsu-sō belongs within the group of approximately forty species classified under the *tomaso* category. --- **According to the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会), in the category of Mountain Grasses:** Karamatsu-sō (唐松草) — A common/popular name; the correct written characters are unknown.
