この植物を「長刀香薷（ナギナタコウジュ）」とするのは誤りではない。「長刀（ナギナタ）」とは、その花穂が横に反り曲がって長刀（なぎなた）の形に似ているためである。香薷には数種類がある。
香薷には大葉・細葉の二種類があり、大葉のものがこれ（ナギナタコウジュ）である。細葉のものが石香薷であり、山中の石の上に多く生え、石の上に生えるものなので葉が細い。長刀香薷・葉香薷があり、蓼の穂のような形のものを「長刀」と呼ぶ。

**Japanese name for Sekikōju (石香薷 / Rock Elsholtzia):**
Nezumiabura (name used in Ōshū / northern Honshū)
Inuararaki (name from the *Engishiki*)
Inue (name from the *Wamyōshō*)
Naginata-kōju (name used in the western provinces)
It is not incorrect to call this plant "Naginata-kōju" (Long-halberd Fragrant Herb). The name "Naginata (長刀, halberd)" comes from the way the flower spike bends and curves sideways, resembling the shape of a naginata (a Japanese pole weapon with a curved blade). There are several varieties of Kōju (香薷).
Kōju comes in two varieties: large-leaved and small-leaved. The large-leaved variety is this one (Naginata-kōju). The small-leaved variety is Sekikōju (石香薷, Rock Elsholtzia), which grows abundantly on rocks in the mountains; because it grows on rocks, its leaves are all thin. Among the varieties are Naginata-kōju and Ha-kōju; the variety whose flower spike resembles that of knotweed (Polygonum/Persicaria) is called "Naginata."
