The *Guangdong Xinyu* (New Discourses of Guangdong) states: Everything found in Mount Luofu is associated with the phoenix. Not only do birds of five colors — red, emerald, and azure — qualify as phoenixes, but even large butterflies are regarded as "Little Phoenixes."
The *Senchūfu* (Compendium of a Thousand Insects) states: On the fifteenth day of the fifth month of the sixth year of Bunka (1809, year of the己巳), a chrysalis was obtained from inside a *sukashi-tawara* (a type of woven straw bag), and was stored as-is. On the ninth day of the sixth month, the chrysalis broke open and a butterfly emerged — eighty-three days having passed. That butterfly is precisely the one illustrated here. Its cocoon is shown below in the section on *tensan* (wild silkworm). It is commonly known as *tegus* (天蚕糸, silkworm gut). It is also said to be used for making fishing lines. When shown to the Dutch physician Siebold, he said he had "never seen it before."

The *Kōmoku Shōsetsu* (Detailed Explanation of the Compendium of Materia Medica) states: There is also a black-winged butterfly, commonly called *yamajōro*. The edges of its wings bear a reddish color. Some have wings that are entirely azure or green. This butterfly also has red markings along the edges of its wings. Its Chinese name is *Xuánwǔ Chán* (玄武蝉, "Black Warrior Cicada/Butterfly").
