The seven families, now acting in unison, have raised disputes over various matters such as the rights to thoroughfare fields (ōrai-den) and the matter of adopted children of temple monks (sōsō yūshi), and have made various objections even regarding matters that had been officially settled in recent years, including the duties of estate managers (daikan-yaku), the performance of religious ceremonies (shinji kinkata), and court ranks—stirring the entire shrine into turmoil. When all is said and done, among the shrine officials, the negi and hafuri of Shingū Shrine and those below them are subject to sequential reassignment (jidai tennin) in accordance with shrine law, and thus there had never been any dispute between the shrine officials of Shingū and below and the ujibito. However, it has been the intention of the seven families that, having established themselves as "the seven families," they wished to make all other shrine families into persons of a distinctly different and lesser status, reducing them to subordinates. It is for this reason that, from times past, they have represented the ujibito as persons of a separate and lesser standing, and have raised these disputes. Furthermore, since it is the ancient custom and precedent of the shrine that all ujibito may advance in sequential reassignment all the way up to the position of chief priest (kannagi), there is inherently no distinction of status among them. It is precisely because the ujibito believe this to be so, and wish not to be diminished in any matter, that these disputes have not ceased. Of the seven families established by official designation in the fourth year of Kanban (1664), five families became extinct in the sixth year of Kyōhō (1721), and as of now, only the single family of Hayashi Kunai continues these aforementioned disputes…
