端吟味之上一社之挙状ヲ相添申上候事ニ御座候
旨申上候尤右之節位階申上候は是迄申上来候
通ニ而各別之願も無御座殊年齢之儀ハ
享保四年氏人十五歳ゟ可申爵旨御書渡有之
上ニ候得ハ何之障も有之間敷儀ニ候処当神主
林宮内権大輔様前々より近衛様え御心易出
入仕御贔屓ニ被思召候故冨野備中守と申者
をも取持相共ニ切々御内証伺公仕氏人中之儀
を色々申さゝへ面々之勝手宜議而已申上候ケ様之
訣故官位等之儀も滞候儀と相聞候依之其後
官位申上候節も思召被為有候由ニ而勅許不被
成下候近年段々御吟味之上被仰出候御書渡

端々まで吟味の上、一社の挙状を添えて申し上げる次第でございます旨を申し上げました。もっとも、右の節に位階を申し上げるのは、これまで申し上げてきた通りであり、特別の願いは御座いません。殊に年齢の儀については、享保四年に氏人は十五歳より爵位を申し上げるべき旨の御書渡しがあった上は、何の差し障りもあるはずのない儀でございます。ところが、当神主・林宮内権大輔様は、前々より近衛様へご懇意に出入りなさり、ご贔屓に思し召されていることから、冨野備中守と申す者をも取り持ち、共々たびたび御内証にお伺い公仕し、氏人中のことを色々と差し障り申し、面々の都合の良いことばかり申し上げる次第です。このような訳故、官位などの儀も滞っていることと聞き及んでおります。これにより、その後、官位を申し上げる節も、（近衛様の）思し召しがあられる由でありながら、勅許をお下しくださらず、近年段々とご吟味の上、仰せ出された御書渡しがあり、ようやく一社が静謐に収まりかけておりましたところ、社家第一の官位のことまでこのように滞っている儀は、氏人中一同にとって迷惑至極に存じます。近年、氏人中の内にて相続を仰せ付けられた五家の者共も、神主・林宮内の組に加わり、ただ今は…

…having deliberated on every detail, we presented our petition accompanied by the shrine's formal recommendation letter (kyojō). It should be noted that the petition for court ranks at that time followed the same procedure as has always been observed, with no special request involved. Furthermore, regarding the matter of age, since in the fourth year of Kyōhō (1719) there had been an official written directive stating that ujibito could petition for court ranks from the age of fifteen, there should have been no impediment whatsoever. However, the current chief priest, Lord Hayashi Kunai-no-Gon-no-Taifu, having long maintained close and intimate relations with Lord Konoe and being regarded with favor by him, took it upon himself to act as intermediary for a certain man named Tomino Bichūnokami, and together they repeatedly made private inquiries and appearances, interfering in various ways with the affairs of the ujibito and petitioning only for what was convenient for themselves. It appears that for these reasons, matters such as court ranks have been held up. Consequently, even when court ranks were subsequently petitioned for, despite there being indications of favorable intentions, imperial sanction (chokkyō) was not granted. In recent years, after repeated deliberations, official directives were issued, and the shrine had just barely begun to settle into a state of peace and quiet—yet the matter of court ranks, of the utmost importance to shrine families, has been delayed in this manner, causing the greatest inconvenience to all members of the ujibito.
