英語訳

(Continued from previous page) Next, there are retainers called "aozamurai" (青侍, lower-ranking attendants) who serve below the ujibito and perform divine duties (神役). Such persons are in a separate category entirely. Entry: Those called the "Gokan-yaku" (五官役, the Five Officials) — the five senior shrine administrators attached to the main shrine (本社) — hold separately distinguished positions of great importance, and there is no question of their removal on this occasion. The present petition concerns the discontinuation (断絶) of the Negi and Hafuri positions at the subsidiary shrines (末社). Entry: In ancient times, there were twenty-one Negi and Hafuri in total, but at present there are only seven or eight, meaning that some twelve or thirteen positions are vacant (闕). It is regarding these vacancies that the present petition is made. When a Negi or Hafuri position falls vacant, [the ujibito] succeed to it—— 《Marginal note: As in the original — damage from insects (虫損)》 ——or so the ujibito [are entitled to do]. Entry: Those who hold Negi and Hafuri [appointments] are called "shrine administrators" (社司). Those who do not hold such appointments are all "ujibito." There is no distinction in secular family status (俗姓) either. This is indeed a matter deserving reverent care before the divine presence (神前の御札の慎). Although the articles stated above are contested on this occasion, the proper channel (筋目) by which ujibito become Negi has been severed, causing hardship to many among the ujibito. Moreover, in the current reign, shrine construction (御造営) has been carried out even to the subsidiary shrines, as in ancient times. It is therefore all the more fitting that even one Negi or Hafuri of a subsidiary shrine should be maintained in succession, so as to devote oneself to prayers for the eternal prosperity of the Imperial reign (御宝祚長久). Yet the shrine administrators have raised unfounded objections, scheming to permanently abolish the offices of Negi and Hafuri — and furthermore showing no fear of divine will (神慮). This is a most outrageous state of affairs. We respectfully request that the above be duly conveyed [to the relevant authorities], and that the vacant Negi positions be granted [to the ujibito]. We would be most gratefully—— (Continued on next page)
