4th day of the 12th month, Kan'ei 4 (1627) — From the Shrine Officials of Kamo Shrine
Item: A statement submitted by the *ujibito* (clan members) side.
[Note in original: However, this was not submitted.]
Item: Concerning the claim that Jūsetsu and Shigemura are acting deputies (*dairi*) of the *gonnegi* (provisional chief priest).
Item: Jūsetsu was previously an *ujibito* (clan member), but during the Keichō era (1596–1615), he was appointed as *gonnegi* and duly received a *kuzen* (official imperial appointment document). Moreover, there is a written certificate to that effect. Therefore, the claim that he holds the position merely as a deputy is a falsehood. As for the current holder of the title Ōkura no Shōyū Shigemura, he has not received a *kuzen* for the position of *gonnegi*, and therefore he is indeed serving as a deputy.
Item: Concerning the assertion that *ujibito* cannot become *shashi* (shrine officials).
We have presented numerous precedents (*kanrei*) demonstrating that *ujibito* have become *shashi*. There should be no written document stating that it cannot be done.
Item: Concerning the matter of the *negi* (priests) and *hafuri* (ritualists) of the subsidiary shrines (*massha*).
It goes without saying that in ancient times there were twenty-one such persons. At present, there are seven or eight. In particular, since there is a vacant *negi* position, we have submitted our request in accordance with precedent.
Item: Concerning the claim that *shashi* and *ujibito* wear different mourning garments.
Regardless of whether one is a *shashi* or *ujibito*, those who hold an official shrine position observe the avoidance of death pollution (*shi-e*). Furthermore, even those of lower status, such as *aozamurai* (low-ranking samurai attendants) and *jinin* (shrine servants), observe the same rules so long as they hold their respective positions. Such things are by no means unusual.
Item: Concerning the matter of ascending to the palace (*shōden*). (Continued on the next page.)
