As stated above, there is no difference whatsoever in the common (*zokushō*) surnames of the *shashi* and *ujibito*, and when holding the position of *negi*, both should be treated in the same manner [regarding the right to ascend to the palace]. Item: Concerning the matter of *shinashi-na* (status names) for *shashi* and *ujibito*. Both *shashi* and *ujibito* use names such as "*Maru*" and "*Tayū*." Furthermore, the claim that *ujibito* are unrelated to court ranks is a falsehood. We submit our statement regarding those from the Fifth Rank up to the Fourth Grade (*Shihon*). Item: Concerning the assertion that *ujibito* should not become *negi*. We have submitted our request for the *negi* position in accordance with both ancient and modern precedents. [Summary statement:] The various points raised above by the *shashi* are not in fact relevant to our present petition regarding the *negi* position. In short, as we have stated repeatedly, this is by no means a matter of those individuals competitively seeking the *negi* positions already held by others. Rather, we submit this petition because there are numerous *negi* positions that are currently vacant. Nevertheless, the *shashi* raise various objections, and matters have reached the point where there appears to be a scheme to cause the *negi* positions to become permanently extinct. We humbly request that these circumstances be duly heard and understood, and that an order be issued allowing the *negi* positions to be continued and succeeded to. We would be most grateful for such a disposition. Thus, as stated above. 12th month, Kan'ei 4 (1627) [Separate record:] The *ujibito* Nariyoshi, ○ (Nari–), and Narioki — a father and his two sons across three generations — without changing their surname registration (*sei-ko*), were appointed among the *ujibito* of the Acupuncture Physician (*harisoshi*) and granted the right of ascent to the palace (*shōden*). Item: Because the petitions and counter-statements of the *shashi* and *ujibito* as described above had been submitted repeatedly, an imperial inquiry (*chokumon*) was directed to the various noble houses.
