Item: The memorandum (*tome*/retained copy) submitted by the *ujibito* party Memorandum (*Oboegaki*) Item: Jūsetsu submitted his petition based on established precedent (*senrei*), and accordingly a *kuzen* (imperial oral decree) was issued and granted. It has been the customary practice under shrine law (*shahō*) since ancient times for *ujibito* (clan members/parishioners) to become *shashi* (shrine officials). Item: Upon receiving the *kuzen*, Jūsetsu duly performed the *haiga* (formal act of worship and acknowledgment) before the deity, renewed the sacred amulets (*ofuda*) at the shrine, and delivered notice to the *kannagi* (chief shrine priest). There is no doubt whatsoever regarding these matters. Item: Concerning Jūsetsu's performance of shrine duties (*shayaku*): at the time he received the *kuzen*, he was already approaching eighty years of age (*hachijun*), and furthermore, as he was chronically ill and had difficulty walking, he sent a messenger to make requests through the *shō-hafuri*, with whom he shared a familial connection, at the time of religious ceremonies (*shinji*). As regards his illness and advanced age, there is no doubt about these facts within the Kamo Shrine community. Item: The claim that the position of *gon-hafuri* was "entrusted" (*azuke-oki*) by the *shō-hafuri* is an outright falsehood—the foremost of fabrications. We respectfully request that the relevant documents (*shōmon*) be produced and examined. The *kuzen* was granted in accordance with established precedent, and yet to raise various objections to this is, in sum, to speak without fear of the imperial will (*eiryō*). Item: Regarding the *ōrai-den* (transit lands): because Jūsetsu's personal finances (*shinjō*) were insufficient, the *ujibito* community provided these as a form of mutual assistance (*gōryoku*). It is not a matter limited to Jūsetsu alone—providing such assistance to *shashi* who are in financial difficulty has been a practice that has occurred repeatedly since former generations. Item: As for the *ujibito*, whether those of old or those of the present day, there is not the slightest distinction [to be made between them]… *(Page ends here; text continues on the following page.)*
