(Continued from previous page) ...at the time of [the shrine's] renovation, [they] claim abandonment or that it does not conform to precedent, and [we] humbly request to be appointed to the position of Negi [a shrine priest rank]. We would be most grateful for such an appointment. We respectfully request that the above articles be presented [to the appropriate authority]. We humbly and respectfully submit this petition with the utmost sincerity. 24th day of the 12th month, Kan'ei 4 [1627] Submitted by the Ujibito [clan members] One item: As His Excellency the Taikō Takatsukasa (from Lord Nobufusa) inquired in detail about the above claims, the following is a record of the single document submitted to His Excellency the Taikō. Memorandum One item: Regarding the matter that there is no distinction between Shasha [shrine officials] and Ujibito [clan members] Before being appointed as shrine officials (Shasha), all [persons concerned] are referred to as Ujibito [clan members]. When an Ujibito takes charge of a shrine position, they are called a Shasha. Since there has fundamentally been no distinction in secular family lineage between Shasha and Ujibito, Ujibito are appointed as Shasha. This practice is not limited to our shrine; there are many similar cases at other shrines. Particularly at the Kasuga Shrine, it is a clear and established fact that a Ujibito has been appointed as a Kannagi [shrine priest/神主]. If Ujibito and Shasha were persons of entirely separate households, how could someone who once became a Ujibito be appointed again as a Shasha? There are numerous entries in genealogies and old records stating that Ujibito were appointed as Shasha. Furthermore, during the Keichō era [1596–1615], the Ujibito Jūsetsu was appointed as Gon-Hafuri [権祝, an assistant shrine priest rank], demonstrating that there has been no distinction among Ujibito from ancient times to the present. Whether a Shasha becomes a Ujibito, or a Ujibito of many generations, regardless of how near or far removed in generations, [they have] from ancient times until the present [received] Kuzen [imperial appointment documents] from the Fifth Rank up to the Fourth Grade...
