Item: When the shrine priest (kannagi) visits Shimogamo Shrine and Kifune Shrine, the aforementioned fourteen household retainers (ieko) are to serve as an escort.
Item: Those called ujibito (parishioner-attendants) are to hold the hem of the shrine official's robe and carry his fan and other items during sacred ceremonies at the shrine grounds.
Item: When the Matsushita kannagi performs the haiga ceremony (formal visit of congratulations upon assuming office), the role of escorting him and receiving and keeping the shrine's sacred tablets is a hereditary duty of a person called Jingoro, who is the very ujibito now seeking the shrine position.
Item: When the Mori kannagi performs the haiga ceremony, the role of receiving and keeping the sacred tablets belongs to an ujibito called Daizen-no-suke.
Item: Even on occasions such as the Sengu (shrine relocation/rebuilding ceremony), the ceremonial protocols for ujibito and shrine officials are entirely separate and distinct.
The above is a general memorandum regarding the distinctions between shrine officials and ujibito. Further details concerning the annual ritual calendar will be written up and presented at a later time. It is entirely unprecedented for an ujibito to seek a shrine official position. Should this be permitted on this occasion, the laws of the shrine would be utterly destroyed, and we fear that the will of the deities would become difficult to fathom. That said, the line of shrine official families has not died out, and we speak no falsehood whatsoever. We are simply stating that this would deviate from established precedent; if there is any doubt about this, please conduct whatever investigation you see fit. We would be most grateful if this matter could be given your most gracious consideration.
